Summary0011733: World Gen Crashes After 10-20 Years on ARM/M1 machine
DescriptionNo new Dwarf Fortress world can be generated with history longer than 10-20 years. Crashing happens somewhere between Year 8 and Year 20. Thus, only new worlds with "Very Short" histories can be created.
Steps To ReproduceOpen Dwarf Fortress on a Mac running Big Sur. Select "Create New World!" Choose any history other than "Very Short" and begin world creation. Crash happens between Year 8 and Year 20 on average.
Additional InformationTo run Dwarf Fortress on macOS Big Sur (11.0.0 and up), these steps must be taken:

- Open init.txt
- Change PRINT_MODE: 2D to PRINT_MODE: STANDARD (or just about any setting other than 2D)

Forging crash persists across different PRINT_MODE settings tested.

Can confirm on another Macbook Pro with M1, although for me crash occurs around year 30 (on POCKET ISLAND). And also I get a crash during the fortress mode around the same year of history (so, if during the worldgen crash occurs at year 31, I can still stop the worldgen at year 30 and play the fortress mode, but the game in the fortress mode freezes in the middle of year 31). Not sure if it is related, but it seems so.

Here to confirm, on another Macbook Pro with M1. Crashes at the exact same time. Thanks.

Note: if I click the screen it becomes unresponsive and I have to force-quit. If I wait it simply crashes and quits itself.

macos 12.3.1 M1Pro using lazy mac pack, there's the same crash on generation, however it seems to not happen with some tilesets, e.g. generation with CLA crashes, but goes on without a problem as long as you leave it with Spacefox. I can change the tileset after generation and play with any other tileset.

same thing on macOS 12.6 on a macbook air m1 (MacBookAir10,1)

it seems to be a segfault. here's the detailed information reported by macos (in a gist since it's quite verbose): https://gist.github.com/kleinschmidt/7305a80666c5f603c726a8563a2d68f8
