Summary0003092: Fell mood dwarf has tantrum after killing his target, then goes insane.
DescriptionMy fort, which was full of unhappy and tantrumming dwarfs finally got one of the two unusual moods, a fell mood. The dwarf milled around for a bit until another dwarf walked past him, then he chased his target into a booze store and killed him. He then had a tantrum, and shortly afterwards went insane.

It strikes me that a fell (or macabre) mood is an uber tantrum, since they are only going to occur when a dwarf is already unhappy. In one you break furniture and start fist fights, the other you kill another dwarf. It is odd that a tantrum, a lightweight hissy fit, can over ride a fell mood, a murderous rage.

In terms of gameplay, it is rare enough, and hard enough, to get a fell or macabre mood that it is disappointing to lose one to a tantrum.

I dont know if he had calmed from the tantrum if he would have returned to the mood or not. The target/victim was only a passing aquaintance, but appears to have been the trigger for his tantrum, so even this relationship increases the chance of a tantrum interupting the mood.

I was unable to repeat this, or to get another dark mood, as I lost the fort to goblins as my bridge defences were destroyed by tantrums.

For clarity, I would suggest that dwarfs in fell or macabre moods are not subject to tantrums.

Back in 40d, happy dwarves that entered a strange mood got their happiness forced to 100 ("quite content"), and I suspect that the same happened with unhappy dwarves as a way to prevent this exact situation from happening.

Could the Fell dwarf had a friend with the one he killed? that could cause a "Had a friend die" unhappy thought that pushed him over the edge into insanity.

I am experiencing a similar downward spiral situation. Usually I just quit and start a new fortress, but I decided to ride this one out. (started 0000036:0000100 dwarfs (50 kids) and now >70)

Some things related to the reported bug: A melancholy dwarf, instead of "no job" actually was "on break" for a while. You know, being melancholy is hard work!

Also, did you notice any job cancellation spam due to tantrums? I had several instances "McUrist cancels clean, throwing a tantrum) x20. "McUrist cancels give water, throwing a tantrum" etc, etc.

This seems reasonable.
