Summary0005456: Dwarves won't haul or dump food/drink brought on embark
DescriptionEvery time I've started a game in 31.02, my dwarves refuse to touch any food or alcohol I bring along.

They will eat and drink it, but only at the wagon site. They refuse to move the barrels until the food has all been consumed.

I have also tried dumping the barrel, dumping the food, and dumping both the barrel and the food, and still nothing.

Once the food has been consumed, the dwarves treat the barrel normally. All food produced or imported or otherwise not brought on embark is also treated normally.

Stockpiles and dump sites have room, dwarves are not set to ignore food, all dwarves have hauling labors activated.

I did a cursory search through mantis for any similar bugs, but did not find this one.

Happens in numerous generated worlds with different params.
I only use Dwarf Therapist (sometimes), and haven't used it in this region yet. No other mods.
Steps To ReproduceEmbark anywhere, and bring food and alcohol.
Designate a stockpile/dump site and try to get it hauled or dumped
Watch as the dwarves claim they have "no job" and dash outside to do all of their eating or drinking.
After all embarked food/drink has been consumed, everything works normally.
Additional InformationHere's a save (woo scorching desert embark)

I said "31.02" in the description but I meant "34.02".

Curse these groundbreaking amazing new releases.

As for why they're not dumping your items, check your options menu, and you'll probably see that dwarves are set (by default) to ignore refuse from outside. Items marked for dumping are classed as refuse, and since your wagon is outside, even if the items are marked for dumping no dwarf will ever take the task so long as that option is set.

And while you're at it, check all your other hauling options too.

Alright, thanks Logical2u, that made them dump it. So that's a quick-fix for me, at least.

Still, it'd be nice if they just naturally hauled them again. They used to, back in the good ol' days of 31.

I don't see anything wrong with my hauling options. Nothing that raises any flags for me, anyway.

If there's anything specific you'd like me to check, let me know.

Just got finished dumping the food and booze indoors. Once I reclaimed it, they moved it to the stockpiles like normal. Hooray~

I have this same issue, in .34.10.

The work around, where I designate the food inside the barrels for dumping, then turn on outside refuse hauling in the (o)rders menu works for me, but is a HUGE pain in the rear to have to do each time, as I have to dump all of my food individually, then the barrels, then claim them all again.

Is there any better way to do this?

So dumping does work, taking to stockpile doesn't? The bug summary line should be changed. Also they seem to hall drink barrels OK (as long as there are empty spaces in the destination stockpile) (v34.11).

I think I found the problem: food brought on embark doesn't get hauled to custom stockpiles with food enabled. I made a food stockpile with p-f, and the dwarfs fill it. Enabling any other item types isn't a problem, too. They just don't use for example a weapon stockpile with food enabled.

So, the real problem is that embark food won't be brought to a stockpile that wasn't made with p-f.

Is it possible that barrels were not allowed and everything was in a barrel?

Kwieland: That's... not a bad thing to check, actually.

Okay, yeah, Kwieland had it. Non-food stockpiles don't have barrels allowed by default.

Color me embarrassed. Oh well, let this be a signpost for other noobs with the same problem, I guess.

This issue can be resolved.
