For those who aren't familiar with the terminology used on the forums, the reporter here is referring to something called a "magma piston", which is just a large block of natural stone dropped down into a pool of magma in order to displace the magma upward.

In other words, dropping a large chunk of natural stone down a number of Z-levels is apparently causing it to split into multiple pieces. Judging from an old movie on DFMA (http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1105-plugginganaquiferwithacavein), this issue dates back to version 0.28.181.40d.
