Summary | 0010006: Children make no attempt to leave unpleasant environments (e.g. out of doors when cave adapted)
Description | This is a behavioural oversight I suspect. I used a Civilian alert to order my dwarves outside and see how many were badly-cave-adapted. Once I ended the alert, a few days later, almost all the children stayed outside even though several of them were puking their guts out. I've noticed before that they obey an alert, but almost always stay put when it's ended. It's reasonable for them to stay put if they have no reason to move, but feeling ill, being rained on, etc. ought to produce /some/ avoidance behaviour in children and idle dwarfs. Conversely, could you have disciplined dwarves who try to fight these effects to toughen themselves up?

I don't think dwarves in general know how to avoid unpleasant effect/environments; they just complain about them. Children are particularly bothersome in that they go outside to pick up precious underwear from killed enemies, and then they start to play where they happen to be (in the middle of a battle field). Since playing is a need satisfaction task, children often ignore burrows and continue to play in dangerous environments even when ordered back inside (that's a general issue with needs versus burrows). |

Come to think of it, children should also want to seek out parents, siblings and possibly other children of similar age. At present their main activities are limited to 'play', 'play make believe' and 'play with toy'. While I know I'm now crossing over into feature request territory, expanding children's behaviour would dilute the bug. 'Play with <other child[ren]>', 'Play with <parent/sibling>', 'Play tag/hide and seek' etc. I noticed this side because of dwarf miserable because she spent little time with family. But she had four kids - who were scattered to the four corners of the fortress doing their own thing. Dwarf children should like to be with their parents and hence be biased to spend time in their parents' rooms and - perhaps more dangerously - where they work. So perhaps we also need child-safe doors as well as pet-safe? I will log these as feature requests on the forums, but I've put them here as they are issues related to the bug and might affect how it's addressed. |

So you don't have a meeting area set up outside? It sounds like most of this is a feature request to me, but children not moving after an alert has expired would probably be a bug. |
