Summary | 0010426: Military squads don't all return, blocks squad from all commanded actions
Description | When I sent a 10-man squad out to raid a goblin site, 7 dwarfs returned. 3 were marked as "travelling". They weren't listed as captured on the "c-p" screen for recovering captured civilians... they were just stuck in the travel cycle. Now that squad cannot be ordered to station somewhere, kill a creature, fight, or anything else, because since members of it are flagged as traveling they are exempt. In the attached save, squad C is in this situation and the fortress is about to fall because of it.
Steps To Reproduce | Make 10 man squad, send to raid in dangerous area, count dwarves on return

Here's another bugged save: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13292 |
This one seems erratic, I haven't been able to reproduce it. Squads return like migrants, re-entering the map separately over time. |
Thanks for those saves. I think we need to find out why these raids lead to dwarves getting lost on their way while all those other missions do work as they should. Maybe searching for the lost dwarves in adventure mode or in Legends could help? |
Legends mode shows that they returned to the city, but the game still lists them as "traveling". Apparently they aren't making it back on the map somehow, but part of the game thinks they are. Retiring the fort and unretiring does not address the issue (tried). |
Can confirm that this happens in 0.44.05 still. Sent 70 to explore ruins, got back 68 with 2 stuck on (traveling). |
Sent 10 dwarves to find an artifact none have returned. Legends doesn't say anything about them. |
Got a bugged save. This one is pre-bug, just send the only squad on a raid anywhere you please (I raided the northernmost goblin fortress) and the second member of the squad, Udil, will not return. http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13537 |

It looks like this issue was linked to 0010443 in error. The two bugs don't seem to be related. |
Can confirm this still happens in 0.47.05 |

Had this issue happen, out of four squads only the outpost liasion returned. Got a report saying all was well and they destroyed the site and looted treasure, no casualties (but no spoils report at all), been waiting for them to return for a year. Cannot unassign the two squad members that are at the fort (aside from the outpost liasion, one of them has refused to go on missions for a few years, but this has never resulted in missions not following through before). Can provide save, but it is too big for the site. Cannot retrieve them with fix/retrieve-units in DFhack. |

At least some form of this bug is still present. I had this happen on my current fort. Sent 10 dwarves in full steel to raid goblins, 3 returned and the other 7 were "traveling." Legends mode showed nothing for the missing dwarves after the raid. I removed them from the squad and decided to cut my losses. Eventually, I noticed they were in the list of workers I could request from newly incorporated holdings, so I retrieved them with a messenger. They did not return with their equipment, but I got their legendary skills back. |
Yup, still getting this as well. |

I am experiencing the same issue. |

Potential Fix/Cause of Bug - Squad member is a Religious Leader, read below for explanation I may have found a potential solution/cause of this bug. I too had a squad go out and some key individuals never return from the mission. There was no report or other dialog to say what happened to them... until i looked in to Legends even though it only led to more questions. Apparently one of the squad leaders (who was also "Holy Avalanche", Praise be to Snow) was one of the missing dwarves in question. On my noble screen, she was also a Messenger, but was only shown as "traveling" with no way to remove her or swap her position for someone else. I also had made the mistake of deleting the squad she had been in, so I feared I had a doomed, bugged world after reading all this. I did try DFHack's various commands like /retrieve-unit or /stuck-squad, but nothing brings her back. So after about 10 years go by, I open up legends to see what befell the dwarf, thinking she was just standing on some misgenerated cliff or something. So she goes missing in the Summer of 178 and about a month or two later settles in some other location, then another month later, marries a dwarf and then moves to yet another hillocks among my parent civ's holdings; all the meanwhile, my game is still showing her as "traveling" during the following ten years (which she does nothing else, not even pumping out little dwarflins or nuthin). So i think odd, maybe my world is just doomed, but i then consider that she is still being referred to as a Messenger, but I had nicknamed her "Holy Kib". Then it just clicked, Did I ever replace her in her role at the temple? And sure as shit, I didn't and removing her role as Holy Avalanche led to her PROMPT return a day or two later..... So long story short, I sent out a zealous diplomat, she got lost, married some rando, did nothing for 10 years, hears she lost her Avalanche Causal Card, and marches right back in to demand the title back (which of course we gave to her immediately, nobody else wants to dip their toes in snow the entire time they preach for 2 hours...) and solved a 10 year (in game) bug to just... drift away. |
