Summary0011523: Water pressure does not always cause flooding
DescriptionIf you channel out a pit one Z level below the level you want to add a well, and the water flows in at the pit level, i.e. not from above (source is from a river above ground), the water will fill the pit and stop there.
Steps To ReproduceChannel and mine a water path from a river to a pit in your fortress
Make sure the pit is filled from the same level as the pit itself
Open the floodgates
The pit will fill and not equalize, i.e. continue to fill until it's level with the river source.

Can we get a save file with the associated problem?

When I get to waterworks in my current fort I will upload a map.

Seems like a simple introduction to water pressure. Your well room flooded because the water pressure will always rise to the depth-level of its input, soon as you poked that hole you gave it a path upwards closer to its goal (the river it draws from).

If you depressurize it with a diagonal crossing before it reaches the well-pit (upstairs/downstairs being easiest to construct in safe well diagrams in the attached link, horizontal should be fine too but kind of insignificant unless the "piping" of corridors lowers at a gradient towards desired depth) it'll only raise at the z level depth the new depressurized water was established, while the river is pressurizing to restore depth at its surface level (and will flood your entire fortress unrelenting until it reaches its level or can spread no further/is leaked offmap through a fortification carved into mapside/offmap edge either in the caverns or overground)

Save would still be helpful to clarify.

@FantasticDorf that isn't always the case. I attempted to recreate the problem but on a much smaller scale (basically a dug a few tiles below the surface and repeated the "J" path/pit setup. The water immediately flooded up beyond the pit.

Im my previous fort, the path from the water to the pit was much longer, which did not cause flooding

When I get around to waterworks I will upload a file. I had to abandoned a couple other forts due to bugs
