How was DF installed? From a Mint package repo or just the bay12games download? Are all the dependencies installed? What versions are they, especially SDL_image and any libpng? Does changing <DF>/data/init/init.txt to look for the .bmp files make any difference? See https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Installation#Linux |

I installed the game from bay12games. I have SDL_image 2.0. I might not have libpng. Making it look for bmp instead doesn't even change the error message for some reason. |

Given that it's Linux, and not under Wine, I'm going to say it's a duplicate of 0002688 (which I know is old, but the underlying libraries at play are pretty much the same).
