Summary | 0011656: Single dad dwarf with buggy dead wife leaves kid behind when he takes over holding
Description | A single dad dwarf didn't take his kid with him when he took over a holding his squad conquered. I suspect it has something to do with his buggy dead wife. See, he showed up to the fortress with his then alive wife (Wax worker) and kid. The wife had a weird death--I don't quite understand how she managed to slip in the cave water or what she was doing there. i learned she died when her dead body was found. (with her lower half gone) Kid was ok, she wasn't anywhere near the dead body. Now heres the weird part. i can still pull up her profile on the relationship screen. but everything else the game treats her as dead. she came back as a ghost when i didn't properly immortalize her, the game scrubbed any mention of her from her bed, and she doesn't show up in the unit screen.
Steps To Reproduce | I'd check to make sure it doesn't have to do with the buggy wife first of all and heres how id do it take a dwarf family that shows up to the fortress with a kid. kill the wife. check to see if she is still in the relationship screen put the dad in a squad, preferably as the head so he'll take over quicker? he was the head of the squad when this bug happened take over a holding, cross fingers he takes over
Additional Information | buggy wife's grave shows up as part of her possessions but nothing else even when i didnt assign her a grave

better steps to reproduce. take a dwarf family that shows up to the fortress with a kid. kill the wife. just make her drop dead immediately. check to see if she is still in the relationship screen. Proceed if she's not as we're trying to see if this happens in a normal not buggy wife situation. put the dad in a squad, preferably as the head so he'll take over quicker? he was the head of the squad when this bug happened. (he was also a legendary swordsman btw) take over a holding, cross fingers he takes over as administrator. repeat if doesn't. if he takes over a holding check the kid. if the kid leaves it's the buggy wife. tho if it did have something to do with the buggy wife, maybe it also has something to do with the fact that she was found dead? idk but if its the buggy wife id try to find a way to have her die in a way the player doesn't notice and then have the dwarves find her body. |

I'm not sure what the author considers the bug to be. Militia don't bring their family with them when going on raids. If a raid results in a militia member staying at a conquered site that won't cause them to send for their family, even if they can't be recalled from the site. I'm not aware of any ties to death of spouses in the behavior. So, raiding is a way for parents to leave the fortress permanently while leaving their kids behind, even though you can't expel those parents unless they can bring their family with them, which is somewhat inconsistent. Possibly solutions: - Have militia members refuse to go on conquest raids if they've got family ties. That would be incredibly annoying. - Have militia members that have family ties to the fortress return to the fortress after conquest and refuse to stay as an occupation force or as the administrator. That would cause occasional strange cases where you'd send out a force that conquers a site, but nobody is eligible to take over. - Have militia members that have family ties to the fortress refuse to become the administrator and always be eligible for recall. That has the same problem as the previous alternative. |

I personally thought if a parent took over a site their kid would leave the fortress after they took over since that makes the most sense to me? so I figured it was a bug since the kid didn't leave the site. That was the bug. Seemed clear to me so I didn't say it outright. Edit: maybe the parent would have someone visit the fortress to retrieve the kid or do it themselves? seems like a good idea to me but I'm not sure how easy that would be to implement |
