Summary | 0012586: Dwarf Fortress on Linux fails to launch since 50.11 update
Description | The game freezes without ever displaying a window when launched from Steam, though Steam continues to think the game is running until stopped from the Steam client. The game version is 50.11 OS is Linux Mint 21.2 (derived from Ubuntu 22.04 jammy) Launching the game from the command line produces the following output: $ ./dwarfort Loading audio...libfmod.so.13: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directoryFailed to load fmod, trying SDL_mixer...Audio loaded successfully!Loading bindings from prefs/interface.txt Loading bindings from data/init/interface.txt Broken unicode: [KEY:{] Broken unicode: [KEY:|] Broken unicode: [KEY:}] Broken unicode: [KEY:~] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY: ] Broken unicode: [KEY: ] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY: ] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY: Broken unicode: [KEY: Broken unicode: [KEY:] Broken unicode: [KEY: At the final line, the console session hangs and does not respond to Ctrl-C, and the console window must be closed or $ kill used a separate console session to end the process. The issue persists even with a clean reinstall of the latest version. As far as I can tell, no logs are being generated by this freeze. On further searching, I discovered this old bug from 2014 that was marked as resolved at the time that is very similar: https://dwarffortress.mantishub.io/view.php?id=6558 There are indeed a number of broken unicode symbols in the interface.txt file. However, I was unable to resolve the issue following the instructions on that comment thread. Strangely, the bug continues to happen when I roll back to the previous version of DF (50.10) which I know used to work (after resolving some GPU driver issues with my system) without issue back in September, even if I do a clean reinstall of the rollback beta (incl. erasing the broken prefs/interface.txt from the more recent version) --- Marten Kähr <marten@kahr.ee>
