Summary0013251: Squad members still getting stuck while raiding other sites
DescriptionDwarves continue to get stuck traveling when sent on raids despite recent changes. The squad itself usually returns, but one or more members of the squad is left behind, still described as 'Traveling' by the game, and never return to the fortress. Stuck dwarves tend to remain on the squad list, and if the commander/captain is still in the fort you can remove the stuck dwarf from the squad and replace them with someone else. This does not trigger them to return, however.
Steps To Reproduce1. Continue active game on the attached save file, under Military Test Start.
2. Send the existing squad on a mission (set as Raid) to an adjacent goblin dark pit.
3. Wait for them to return.
4. Observe that one dwarf (the exact dwarf changes) remains stuck traveling, despite not dying in the mission report.
Additional InformationThis pair of save files shows the before and after effects of the bug.

I have observed that this drastically increased after .52.03 went live. In a full squad, 40%+ do not return from a mission only a few map tiles away. It may be of interest that the dwarves who do return - if any do - show multiple routes to the destination, indicating that there may(?) have been a pathing change so the squad doesn't move as a unit but each unit's path is being calculated individually? Whatever the reason, sending missions is very broken at the moment.

I am getting the same issue. Sent two full squads against a small goblin site (0000019:0000010 goblins). Never returned. Sent another squad after them. Then another. Then another. All just disappeared into the void.

I was told to throw in my 2 cents. Since the last update, new worlds I've generated come with the following error in the errorlog: "camp order missing parent -- army will camp forever". And as far as I can tell that means that the dwarves go out and immediate forget which site they're supposed to return to after the mission. They're instead wandering around lost in the fog of Armok looking for a null site called "", sometimes breaking out of it when they get close to a site of your civ, increasingly likely if they have family there... or so I hear. I haven't sent any missions myself. I've tested this with vanilla world generation.

I have additional info, and would upload the save to show if I knew how to do so :) I have a human unit who showed up as a monster hunter. It wasn't until he was named a lord in his civ that I noticed that he has a defined squad already; I suspect he is a human NPC experiencing the same bug and has settled in my fort because he didn't remember how to path back to his own civ.

Potential Fix/Cause of Bug - Squad member is a Religious Leader, read below for explanation

I may have found a potential solution/cause of this bug. I too had a squad go out and some key individuals never return from the mission. There was no report or other dialog to say what happened to them... until i looked in to Legends even though it only led to more questions. Apparently one of the squad leaders (who was also "Holy Avalanche", Praise be to Snow) was one of the missing dwarves in question. On my noble screen, she was also a Messenger, but was only shown as "traveling" with no way to remove her or swap her position for someone else. I also had made the mistake of deleting the squad she had been in, so I feared I had a doomed, bugged world after reading all this. I did try DFHack's various commands like /retrieve-unit or /stuck-squad, but nothing brings her back. So after about 10 years go by, I open up legends to see what befell the dwarf, thinking she was just standing on some misgenerated cliff or something.

So she goes missing in the Summer of 178 and about a month or two later settles in some other location, then another month later, marries a dwarf and then moves to yet another hillocks among my parent civ's holdings; all the meanwhile, my game is still showing her as "traveling" during the following ten years (which she does nothing else, not even pumping out little dwarflins or nuthin). So i think odd, maybe my world is just doomed, but i then consider that she is still being referred to as a Messenger, but I had nicknamed her "Holy Kib". Then it just clicked, Did I ever replace her in her role at the temple? And sure as shit, I didn't and removing her role as Holy Avalanche led to her PROMPT return a day or two later.....

So long story short,

I sent out a zealous diplomat, she got lost, married some rando, did nothing for 10 years, hears she lost her Avalanche Causal Card, and marches right back in to demand the title back (which of course we gave to her immediately, nobody else wants to dip their toes in snow the entire time they preach for 2 hours...) and solved a 10 year (in game) bug to just... drift away.
