| Summary | 0013421: "Melt a metal object" jobs are cancelling because "Needs melt-designated item in linked stockpile". | ||||
| Description | Smelting always works with fortress-produced items, but *sometimes* the job does not recognise melt-designated items left behind by goblin sieges as existing. I now have a stockpile near my smelters of copper and iron armour and weapons which are all melt-designated, but they have been there for years, and whenever I set a work order to melt metal objects, the jobs always cancel immediately. Initially, I wondered whether the decoration on items was a factor. But even if it is, it is not the whole story, as I have both decorated and undecorated items that cannot be smelted. | ||||
| Steps To Reproduce | Wait for goblin siege. Collect the arms and armour they leave behind. Try to smelt all the goblinite. | ||||

Two more things: 1) If someone can tell me how to upload a save file, I will do that. 2) It is not a stockpile issue; I have tried all combinations of linked/unlinked stockpiles and workshops. |

OK, I have an update. Bizarrely, this is actually a problem specific to Magma Smelters. I built a regular smelter, gave it a 'Melt a metal object' task to loop indefinitely, and it very happily issued and completed jobs to melt all the stubborn melt-designated objects in my stockpile. |

In the loading menu there's a Files button to the left of each save, that opens a little menu with another Files button that opens the save folder; right-click that folder and "Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder", then upload that file to https://dffd.bay12games.com/category.php?id=20 (or some other file host), and share the link here. If the world uses any mods, you should also include their folders in the installed mods folder, which you can open by clicking the mod on the mod screen from the main menu. (Edit: DFHack is not a technically mod, if there's not a mods button on the main menu, then you don't have any.) |

Thanks. Here's the uploaded save: https://dwarffortressbugtracker.com/view.php?id=13421 I use DFHack, but don't know how to include that in the way you've described. I don't see a mod screen on the main menu. |

That link is to this report, here's the link to the save https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=17707 (DFHack is not a technically mod, if there's not a mods button on the main menu, then you don't have any.) It's your burrows, the stockpiles are in "Relaxed Alert" and the smelters are in "Full Alert" which is active. |

Gosh, I didn't know burrows worked like that even when no one was assigned to them. Thanks very much for all your help. |
