This is actually deliberate - WOOD items only append " logs" to their name when they do not have the BUILDING flag set. In versions 0.28.181.40d and earlier they would append " wood" in this case, but this suffix was dropped in version 0.31 for unknown reasons.

Whether this actually makes sense, however, is an entirely different question.
