Summary0013520: Kimberlite veins contain no diamonds
DescriptionKimberlite — the only naturally occurring stone that is supposed to contain non-strange obsidian pillar diamonds — contains no diamonds for every world, save, and spawn with Kimberlite present. With mods, without mods, there are simply no diamonds outside of those embedded in Suspicious Rock Formations.
Steps To ReproduceStep Zero: Launch Dwarf Fortress (Steam Version) with DF Hack installed — it is essential for completing the rest of these steps.

Step One: Generate new world. Mineral abundance is irrelevant.

Step Two: Use "Find Embark Location" and select for Nickel. All world locations with Nickel (Garnierite) present should be highlighted green.

Step Three: Click the "Embark" button until the white 4x4 overlay is present. Hover the Embark Area over any 4x4 map tile that shows the presence of Nickel once zoomed in from the World Map to the Regional Map level.

Step Four: Without moving your cursor, press ` to bring up DF Hack and type "prospect all" to reveal whether or not the selected 4x4 plot containing Nickel also contains Kimberlite — you may have to repeat this step on different 4x4 plots of Nickel since not all Gabbro layers contain Kimberlite.

Step Five: Continue the above until you find a 4x4 Embark Site with Kimberlite present through DF Hack.

Note: If you see the presence of Diamonds through DF Hack, do not be deceived! For every Suspicious Rock Formation has a chance to contain Diamonds. Only select your Embark if Kimberlite is present.

Step Six: Embark on that 4x4 plot with Kimberlite present.

Step Six: Upon loading in and without unpausing, type "reveal all" and "prospect all" in any order to both reveal every tile of the site map and to indicate which z-level specifically contains veins of Kimberlite.

Step Eight: Upon finding the vein(s) of Kimberlite, observe and behold the complete absence of diamonds — or any gems for that matter!
Additional InformationQuick Dwarf Fortress lesson: Kimberlite only occurs in veins in Gabbro layers, and Gabbro is the only stone type that contains Garnierite, which is the only ore of Nickel in Dwarf Fortress. Thus, by using the "Find Embark Location" and selecting for Nickel, the map lights up *every* instance of Garnierite and thus *most* instances Gabbro on the map. Unless you want to spend years of your life searching every single tile of every single map chunk containing Garnierite, DF Hack is required to allow for finding Kimberlite-bearing Gabbro layers in a timely manner.
