Summary | 0001627: Woodcutters will not cut wood outdoors when they have been completely surrounded and topped by walls/floors
Description | I normally clear the trees before building my wellhouse by the water and grating / sealing it tight. However this time I decided to try to completely enclose a few trees before cutting them, as my only woodcutter was busy. After I sealed the hut in so the only entrance was a ramp up from a tunnel connecting to the rest of the fortress, the woodcutter was eventually spotted twiddling his thumbs. Checked the status of the woodcutter, no job. Checked the designations on the trees, set to cut. Turned off designation, then back on. No change. Turned off woodcutter job, then back on. No change. Tried it in reverse order, turning off woodcutter job first, then tree cut designation. No change. Tried to set him to woodcut some outdoor trees near him. No change. Moved the woodcutter job to my carpenter. No change.

It sounds like you might have constructed an unpathable ramp setup. Or at least one that later becomes unpathable - there's apparently situations where things can be pathed at first, but subsequently cannot. Can you describe the ramp setup here, or take a picture of the setup for us? Unless you are saying the woodcutter was trapped with the trees and still did no work? |
^^^ Yeah, misuse of ramps or pathfinding problems are the likely culprit here. Was the woodcutter cutting wood before the walls etc? |
The building entrance is a simple ramp up from a tunnel. I dug a channel tile and put up a well with no problem. Dwarves were able to build then drink from the well in the building after I tried to cut the trees, so access was not a problem. I experimented further, and none of my dwarves were able to cut wood, not even new immigrants, not even after I deselected the trees in the building. It was broke pretty good, lol. The woodcutter was able to cut wood beforehand, yes. I've started sending my dwarves out with no trees at all other than the three lumber that is part of the wagon, so to make beds and bins/barrels they must cut wood. I really wish I could use the same font in the post that I use in the editor - it all lines up perfect in the editor. I think it's relatively clear now though 1____OOO OOOOOOOO ______RR 2___WWWWWWWWWW ____W_______TW ____W_DD_____W ____WT___D_C_W ____W____D___W ____W_____T_TW ____WWWWWWWWWW Overlay the 1 and the 2 and you can see the entry O = tiles of a 2-wide path from the fort R = Ramp up D = Ramp down (actually the ramp up from the lower level, of course) W = walls T = trees C = well over a channel The entire W section is fully inclosed by a floor overhead, which was finished before walling off the cistern, installing grates, and popping a hole in the riverbank from a short side shaft that connected to nothing but the surface and the grated entry to the cistern, by building access on the outside of the building, then destroying the stairs after the floor overhead was finished. There is only one dwarf entrance - the one leading to the fortress - the other ramp down leads to the walled/grated cistern where I mined out enough rock to build the building. |

Are there any axes available? Did you use Dwarf Therapist to enable the woodcutting labor? |
There should have been an axe available, I brought one with the original crew, and he had been using it before. I don't even know what Dwarf Therapist is, lol. Never used any addons or tilesets. I imagine it might be worth looking into if it makes dwarves act less drunk. |
Find that axe via the z -> Stocks screen (it'll be under "weapons") and zoom to it. In all probability, a soldier grabbed it and won't give it back (see 0000689). And if you can't find it, just make a crapton of axes. Even training axes (made at the carpenter's shop) will do fine for woodcutting. |
Reminder sent to: Farmerbob Were you able to get any further information about this bug? Can you verify that you had an axe available? |
Footkerchief was correct, one of my dwarves that was in the militia had it and was apparently using it in the kitchen to cut up kitten meat. |
Okay, thanks for looking into it again. |
