Summary0001679: War Dogs remain assigned to dead owners
DescriptionA war dog assigned to a dwarf that later dies will still be assigned to the dead dwarf. The war dog cannot be assigned to another dwarf, presumably because it is already "taken". The war dog still shows up in the Stocks-Animals menu and can be slaughtered, but cannot be toggled for pet availability.
Steps To Reproduce1. Assign a war dog to a dwarf
2. Have the dwarf killed
3. The war dog remains assigned to the dead dwarf
Additional Information-The dog will remain with the body for quite some time after the dwarf's death, even after the body is removed and placed in a coffin
-Viewing the war dog, the caption reads [dog name] pet of [dead dwarf's name]

Is it a bug? I've always thought the dogs remain loyal to their former owner, even after his death. Sounds so... romantic :)

This bug persists in 31.14.

And fwiw, my opinion is that it is a bug. After all, pets will lose their ownership if the owner perishes, why shouldn't work animals?

It's probably a bug, since pets don't do it.
Maybe, handling war and hunting animals as essentially variant pets (including somewhat-easier-to-unassign part) would fix it. And then pet status retention half-life set for the creature or something like this could handle the "cool" part?
