Summary0002092: Dwarves won't make charcoal unless metal ore is present
DescriptionBasically, every time I start a map, my dwarves refuse to work my Wood Furnaces. They'll build them but they ignore it after that. I tried reloads, re-genning the world, enabling all labors for all dwarves; Nothing worked. Then it occurred to me that maybe even though no reactions require metal ore, the engine sees the Wood Furnace as a Smelter and thinks it requires ore present to work. So I mined down a few levels and, lo and behold. As soon as I mined a piece of Limonite, my dwarves ran to the furnace to start pumping out charcoal.
Steps To ReproduceStep 1) Start any map. Don't bring any ore.
Step 2) Build a Wood Furnace
Step 3) Chop Wood and tell tell dwarves to burn it.
Step 4) Wait and watch as they do nothing until you mine a piece of ore. I'm not sure if buying one does it too.

Is anyone else able to reproduce this?

I cannot reproduce this. I normally bring an iron bar, then make an axe with a wood furnace and a forge as the very first thing I do, and I'd never experienced this. I then tried not bringing the metal bar, but it still worked fine. I then tried not bringing the metal bar or logs (instead bringing an axe for chopping down trees), but the wood furnace STILL worked fine.

Have not encountered this myself.

I can freely mark charcoal whenever I want, assuming I have some wood laying around.

i can't make charcoal, but i DO have ore (including limonite)

at one point i was able to make one piece of charcoal, which i used to start a coal-based steel production line. i accidentally let them burn up all the coke and now they're back to no fuel, and again they won't make any charcoal even though plenty of wood and labor enabled.

I've had no problems with making charcoal either. A save showing the problem might be needed here.

I cannot make charcoal either. Where do you want me to send the save?

edit: I was able to get them to make charcoal by rebuilding the wood furnace closer to the labor-enabled dwarf. It appears that some pathfinding issues remain. Of note is that I could not get wood to be moved to a stockpile next to the wood furnace, but I could get it moved to a closer stockpile. There's no funny geometry here - just a long corridor that dwarves won't path to the end to for charcoal jobs, it seems.

Upload to http://dffd.wimbli.com/

But first make sure that you have wood, a dwarf with Wood Burning enabled, and an accessible unforbidden workshop that the dwarf is allowed to work at.

Okay, uploading it soon. Will post a link once it's up.

Okay, here it is. I have 28 logs. The dwarf with wood burning enabled is Iteb Nishavuz, Smith. He produces no error messages, but simply doesn't do it. Tasking other dwarves with the job will intermittently get them to declare that they cannot do it due to lack of logs or simply ignore it. No other workshops, jobs, etc. are using logs at all. No stockpiles are queuing them. The wood furnace is on the southern end of my fortress.

edit: after "solving" the issue by rebuilding the wood furnace closer to the dwarves, I got the same problem when trying to initiate smelting jobs at a smelter located near the old wood furnace. Moving it closer fixed the problem. This looks like a pathing logic error similar to what we saw back in .31.1-4

edit 2: I have to own up to being an idiot. I somehow blocked off access to that tunnel through very strategic workshop placement and only realized once my miners declared that they were starving and dehydrated. Sorry :(

Thanks for investigating, though!

Reminder sent to: codeManJones, SKRen

Do you have a save that demonstrates this problem? If so, it would be helpful to upload it to http://dffd.wimbli.com/
