Summary | 0002179: Water over engraved floor is brown rather than blue, water on other floors is just blue
Description | I was setting up a bathing/swimming pool underground for my dwarves, and decided to engrave the whole room before I filled it. Once I filled it, I found that when viewing the z-level with the water, the water in the main portion of the pool (with the engraved floor) appeared brown. Unengraved areas, such as the inflow (smoothed stone) and the entrance/exit for the dwarves (ramps) is blue as normal. Also, when viewed from one z-level above, the open space above the water is blue as expected, rather than brown.
Steps To Reproduce | 1. Dig out an area. 2. Smooth part of the floor in the area, engrave part of it, leave part rough. 3. Fill the area with water. 4. Notice that the water over the rough and smooth areas is blue, but the water over the engraved area is brown.
Additional Information | I've breached the underground cavern. On filling the pool, I discovered to my dismay that bushes can and will grow on muddy engravings (still underwater), destroying them. That's a different bug, though.

I don't think this is a bug. It's been doing this since 40d at least. I always thought it was a coolness factor kind of thing. |
I thought that was because it was muddy. |
Also, in 40D, I've noticed that with Maydays graphics pack, engraved tiles (and maybe smoothed as well? I forget) have a golden color when covered by water, so yea it seems normal to me since its muddy when the water dries up. |
I assume the water has mud in it? If so this is as intended. |
Unengraved areas, such as the inflow (smoothed stone) and the entrance/exit for the dwarves (ramps) is blue as normal. Also, when viewed from one z-level above, the open space above the water is blue as expected, rather than brown. That's the crucial part of the report. If it's accurate, then there's definitely something inconsistent going on. |
Confirmed present for 0.34.11 with engraved areas brown and smoothed areas blue though I didn't check if water over engraved stone was blue from 1 z-level up. |
Confirmed for 0.40.09 On same layer engravings are brown while smoothed stone is blue as expected. When seen from one level up, both are shown as blue. |
