Summary0002444: after discovering lava sea it continues to reveal downwards, hitting/discovering adamantine all on its own
Descriptionstarting a new fort i dug as deep as a could pretty quick. i hit a magama pool soon enough but strangely after about 2 minutes t said i discovered a magma sea, 20 minutes later i have discovered adamantine at level 123, about 40 levels below the original magma pool with no further mining
Steps To Reproducedig to a magma pool, watch the map get revealed downwards

"I also think I'll be able to update discovery/revealing of the local underground so that it depends more on where your dwarves have actually been, instead of revealing everything. Active LOS around every dwarf isn't feasible, but it can push the frontier off through the connected areas when a dwarf is vaguely nearby, anyway, so that there can be enormous connected (adventure-explorable) caverns without having them pre-revealed just because you have some dwarves tinkering around far, far above."

Could that new feature explain what you saw?

yes and no, i have a hallway/stairway going down about 60 levels to lava. the caverns are not being discovered till i mine close to them in the yx direction. the lava self discovered 60+layers in the z without any extra z movement by the dwarves. starting the .08 game now

Yeah, this is probably expected behavior, judging by the "vaguely nearby" part of the post I quoted.

does seem a bit quirky though if you can "reveal" more of a cave structure / magma sea by mining out stuff completely unconnected to it 60 z levels above it... Assuming I'm understanding what he's saying correctly.

If something falls into the magma, as is very likely when a magma smelter is destroyed, it can function as a 'scout' as seen in the wiki

"You can instantly discover a magma sea and adamantine if you simply cause a magma-safe cave-in somewhere above the lava. This can be accomplished by creating a floor, then creating a floor out from there with magma safe material, like obsidian. Remove the supporting floor so the obsidian will drop into the magma, and it will never melt, allowing you to use it as a "scout" to find veins of adamantine and a magma sea."
