Summary0002448: Dwarves Give Water to non-wounded
DescriptionOccasionally I see a dwarf performing the Give Water task when there are no thirsty wounded dwarves. After following the dwarf for a while, I see him bring a bucket of water to another dwarf who's already drinking booze. The booze-drinker gets a happy thought for it ("received water recently") and continues drinking the booze.
Additional InformationI don't know whether this happens all the time, or only when there's a patient in the hospital. Currently, there is a patient in my hospital, who has recently received water.

Probably a result of the fix for 0001224. In any case, I'd rather have overzealous water fetching than dehydration. And, hey, free happy thoughts.

It would be helpful to upload a save while the "Give Water" job is in progress. You can upload to http://dffd.wimbli.com/

I saw this too. Will upload a save if I see it again.

I noticed this as well when I got a "McUrist cancels give water, no bucket". "What? Who's injured?," I'm thinking. No reports. Hmmm. Maybe a dwarf fell/etc and it wasn't in the reports. Nope, couldn't find anybody hurt. This explains why. I think in my case it was for the manager who was working on his jobs. It took me 2 game years to see this bug with 22 dwarfs. I'll try to get a save. I have a save, let me know if you want it. I realize that there are two others.

It happened twice in the same game. The first time I checked all the dwarfs, and one was "thirsty", but none were injured. The second time, there was a dwarf thirsty that was asleep, again no one was injured.

I've seen this as well.

One of my miners went for a nap after digging out a new room. He was also thirsty, but I guess sleep won out. While he was snoozing on his bed I noticed one of my other dwarves bring a bucket of water to him.

He finished his nap before the water could be brought to him, and then began chugging a barrel of dwarven wine, as any proper dwarf should.

Looks like dwarves now error on the side of caution, which is nice. Wounded and prisoners shouldn't die of thirst anymore.

Buckets with varying amounts of stagnant water in them are being scattered around my fortress. Is there any way to recover them? I searched the bug reports and the answer seems to be "no", but I thought I would ask here anyway.

Again, I noticed that too. Some of them are being scattered around with both lye and water in them.

EDIT: (And, for the record, I actually kinda like the gratuitous water thing as well -- makes for a nice additional seemingly-spontaneous dynamic. As long as it doesn't mean buckets being left all over the place with stagnant water and/or lye.)

It appears that the stagnant water in the buckets slowly evaporates on some seasonal or annual schedule. I watched one bucket which was in a seldom-used location. I was very busy otherwise so I did not get the exact timeframe, but I did note that the level was decreasing. Eventually the bucket vanished, presumably back into the bucket stockpile. Other buckets likewise eventually vanished but I did not observe their contents decreasing because they were in crowded and busy locations.

An alternative explanation is that Dwarves occasionally stop and drink from buckets of stagnant water (yuck!). There was no pressing reason for this to have happened in my fortress, but who knows ...

I can confirm this as well, I have dwarves sleeping in m hospital non wounded (too lazy to give them rooms, In fact I wonder why you need to assign nobles dining rooms.) and I was getting "Urist Mcwaterdrinker cancels give water: No water source" (I was out of booze and my well kept freezing over)

I have found that milkers will recover buckets containing some stagnant water. The water apparently ends up on the floor around the milking station as "smears of water". The buckets of milk do not contain water, and neither do the barrels of milk.

This is in contrast with the lyemakers, who put their lye into buckets also containing stagnant water and then everyone refuses to touch those buckets for any purpose.

I have, however, managed to sell some watery buckets to caravans. At least that gets them out of the fortress.

Milkers are also taking buckets out of the hospital for their own use, even when there are buckets in a very close nearby stockpile AND when the hospital is defined as a Restricted Traffic area. Frankly, Restricted Traffic designation doesn't seem to stop anyone from doing whatever they like in the hospital, but that's a different issue. :P

@slink: Restricted area is only for traffic flow. For instance, you can restrict all the saplings outside and your dwarfs will not walk on them. However, if a item (say a stray bolt) is on top of a sapling, they will stand on a restricted square to get it.

I often have a collection of buckets scattered on the floor where my soldiers are stationed. As if someone was giving them water.

I can't add much to this, other than to confirm that dwarves do try to give water to non injured members of your fort (Six year game, no invaders, no agressive wild animals present, so no injuries at all.)

I just observed the mayor bringing water to the broker who was sleeping in a bed and happened to be thirsty too. The broker was not injured. I think the mayor was the closest idling dwarf when the broker got thirsty while in her sleep. Also, there was a bucket laying in the ground near the mayor.

I've also observed this happening when thirsty dwarves go to sleep.

I've got this happening in my fort as well - got random "give water" jobs from the beginning of the fort, but could never track them down until now. My manager is currently chasing one of my novice metalcrafters all over the fort, trying to give him water. Metalcrafter isn't injured, nor is he thirsty, nor does he have anything in his status about recently drinking or being thirsty. It's kind of funny, but also irritating since it's taking my manager off work.

The outdoor water in my current 0.31.16 fort freezes towards the end of autumn & doesn't unfreeze until mid spring so I see job cancellations of "Give Water: No accessible water source" very often. When it happens I've checked to see if I have any sleeping dwarves which I don't but there are dwarves who have the "drink" job so I suspect greycat's description is correct. Some of my dwarves have stuff like "enjoyed some alcohol" and "was given water recently" in their status pages so it appears that dwarves are forcing other dwarves to drink water periodically.

This doesn't appear to be save game related, I've seen dwarves with the "Give Water" job without any injured dwarves in all my 0.31.xx forts thus far.

Yes, I too have noticed a large number of dwarves (up to 5 at a time) trying to give water to other dwarves happily going about their own business. On the plus side this prevents idle dwarves, but it also takes away from hauling jobs I need done.

I can confirm this bug is still present in 31.19, just noticed a dwarf give water to a perfectly healthy woodcutter sleeping in his room. I believe this was not present in 31.01, but I can't narrow down the exact version where this bug first appeared.

I've seen this in 3.19.

Do we need a new save, if it comes up again?

This happens ALL the time for me. In every single fortress, I always have either this happen many times, or many cancellations of "Give Water" jobs when there are no injured dwarves, no prisoners, no dehydrated dwarves, and no thirsty dwarves.
I'm playing 31.18.

Seems like a compromise would be to set the threshold at which a dwarf will cancel a job and get a drink by himself slightly below the threshold to generate a "give water" job. I guess the difficulty arrives when you have dwarfs that really want to finish a job, even though the job will take a while yet. I see it most on my manager, which should be able to cancel a job and get a drink at any stage in the process.

Bug still present in 34.05 (just witnessed it). Unfortunately I came here after the fact, or I'd have known to create a save file. I'll keep watch and upload one next time I see a dwarf trying to force-feed someone some water.

Edit: Ok, here's a savegame. Goden Solonnimar is bringing water to a thirsty (but perfectly healthy) dwarf, Stukos Zasustuth. After Goden satisfies Stukos' thirst, Stukos does not cancel her 'drink' action, and will go drink from a nearby stockpile regardless. Savefile: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5815

Still present in 42.03. I had a number of sleeping thirsty dwarves but no water source resulting in a flood of give water cancellations. Upon providing a water source the cancellations stopped and water was delivered to the sleeping dwarves in buckets.

Happens in 42.04. Had a couple of poorly armed dwarves fighting wildlife to a stalemate for a long time. They got thirsty and a couple of dwarves stopped by to give them water. Useful in this case, but probably not intended behavior.

I think this *is* intended behavior. At least, I find it quite useful, and in-character. Many dwarves find helping others rewarding, and they already bring food & drink to dwarves who can't reach their needs due to injury and captivity. Why shouldn't they bring food & drink to those who are away on fort business?
