Short story: Miner dwarf with a copper pick was sent out to dig out/drain out a waterhole in a wall to generate some mud. As soon he digs and the water pours out. He just runs away from the water and on his way drops his copper pick on the ground. He doesn't want to pick it up again, even after trying out several options (see thread for more details).

Are you using Dwarf Therapist to enable/disable the Mining labor?

Nope, no mods or tools at all. Just pure DF.

I've seen similar problems with uncertain cause (no DT involved either). Sometimes, there will be dwarves with mining enabled, and free picks in a stockpile, but they prefer to sit around with No Job rather than getting a pick and going mining. It is possibly related to picks becoming available only after the mining labor is enabled.

Workaround: Turn on woodcutting, wait for them to get a Pickup Equipment job, turn on mining again.

Workaround did work but this should be fixed anyways : )

Not sure what the bug is supposed to be, but the dwarf just doesn't have mining enabled. As soon as you enable it, he runs over and grabs the pick - no workaround needed. You most likely disabled the labor by accident.

I even had him continue digging and when the next little pond poured out, he ran but kept his pick in hand.

FYI to further reporters, the miner dwarf isn't on break and does not have any other jobs, there is no military (no commander noble or squads), the pick is not forbidden, not claimed as owned by another dwarf and not tasked, this is the starting seven dwarfs and there isn't an arsenal dwarf noble.

I wouldn't even link this to 0000535, as there isn't a military at all.

Thanks for checking out the save, Dwarfu.

lokomotivet, any comments before I mark this as resolved?
