Summary | 0002892: Different liaison every year
Description | Liaisons are now being replaced when lost, which is great. However, it seems that there is a different liaison each year. It's never the same one for any of the different civs. That seems unintended.

My fort is about 18 years old now. I wonder if all my liaisons were historical figures who were too old, and thus keep dying. Maybe I should make a backup, abandon, and then check the legends. |
I've experienced the same but only with the elves. I might also add that they always greet me with the dwarven greeting (I'm your liason from the Mountainhome). |
In Legends mode, it looks like the new liaison is getting appointed when the caravan arrives and subsequently removed from the position upon leaving the map. |
Further experience in my current fortress seems to indicate that this is not limited to the Dwarven liaison. It also applies to Human law-givers (they'll visit once after you get your Baron, go through the usual "such a nice place you've carved out", then leave, never to be seen again), as well as invaders (a Goblin civilization sent its General after me, and after he fled he vanished from the civ list and prevented all future goblin sieges from riding giant olms since he was presumably the one who tamed them). |
I got an engraved image of the replacement -- is this actually a bug or bizzare feature? |
This might be a bizarre feature that is caused by an unintended bug. Its one of those things that are both a feature and a bug. |
In a newly generated 0.31.14 fortress with a few raw tweaks (namely, adding a special Diplomat position to both the Human and Elven civilizations, mostly copy/pasted from the Dwarven diplomat position), appointment of a Baron has triggered the arrival of both elven and human diplomats (interestingly, the Humans did not send their Law-giver) in the same manner as back in 40d (Elven diplomat unannounced at the very beginning of Spring with "first contact" text, then the Human diplomat several days after the caravan arrived). Curiously, both diplomats failed to show up in the Civ list until they appeared on the map, and (as per this bug) they both disappeared once they left. Only time will tell whether or not these diplomats get replaced next year. |
It looks like positions responsible for diplomacy and nothing else do properly get replaced when they're made to visit - a replacement Elven diplomat arrived the following year, 1 week after the arrival of the caravan, and proposed a tree cutting quota, complete with the proper Elven diplomat greeting and farewell text. Presumably, the additional responsibilities assigned to the Human's Law-giver prevented a new one from being automatically appointed. |
Part of this appears to have changed in version 0.31.16 - Law-givers are being replaced now. I loaded up one of my old 0.31.12 fortresses (where the Human civilization's Law-giver had visited once over a decade ago and then vanished forever), and a new Law-giver was appointed and arrived the very next summer. |
According to http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/#2014-05-24 , this is fixed in the next version. |
This bug is a duplicate of http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=2931, that was marked as fixed in 0.40.01. |
thvaz: 0002931 seems to be about additional, rather than replacement, liaisons. They might have the same root cause, but the symptoms are different enough to warrant separate reports. If this one's fixed too though, let us know. |
