Summary | 0003041: Fortifications do not hinder goblin arrows
Description | Fortifications no longer seem to hinder attacker arrows and fly through fortifications with ease. I know that fortifications weren't supposed to stop all arrows, even from a distance, but I have never seen a single arrow stopped by a fortification this version,I have even seen one pass through multiple fortifications with not even a hint of stopping. P.S. It may be preventing some archers from trying to fire at all however, see additional information.
Steps To Reproduce | Build some fortifications, stick somebody on the other side, wait for a goblin squad led by an archer.
Additional Information | It also seems that only squadleader goblins will fire through them, and possibly archer squads led by an archer. Archer squads led by a melee weapon user seem to be very picky with target selection, and will not return fire even if fired upon unless their melee leader seems to be able to easily get to them. So maybe the fortifications are preventing regular soldier archers from returning fire at all, while proving no hinderance in the least to leaders?

Even if my guess about the behavior in additional information is correct, that seems a little odd to be intended behavior. |

This may not be a bug with the fortifications, but a bug with the goblin elite marksmen. I've had one siege where one elite marksman led a squad, like you he shot four bolts out of four through my fortifications into my marksdwarves before disappearing downstairs. It didn't stop there, though. It then engaged several of my squads positioned there, shooting his silver bolts through their steel armour every single time he fired a bolt. It was chopped up pretty quickly once my dwarves engaged it in melee, but the first two pages of his combat report are pretty much filled with "The flying ({*Silver Bolt*}) strikes the Axedwarf in the Left Upper Leg, chipping the bone through the steel greaves!" To boot, a lot of that armor was exceptional quality as well. |
Scratch that. It seems to be a problem with archery in general. Every bolt that doesn't miss or is dodged seems to ignore armour entirely. |
Still in .18, elite goblin archers ignore fortifications and armor |
The arrows and bolts are simply too powerful, that's why they appear to ignore armor. It can be partially fixed by going in the raws and editing item_weapon.txt, change [SHOOT_MAXVEL] from 1000 to 30 for both bow and crossbow. |
As far as I remember, elite marksmen, bowmen and blowgunners could already shoot through fortifications in 40d. Might be expected to have motre fun. |
It's a combination of the skill level of the archer and their distance from the fortification. If they're literally standing next to the window aiming in, even somebody who never picked up a bow before can get an arrow inside. If they're a z-level down, have a moat in between, etc. they need a higher skill to make it in, but it's still possible... Main problem I see with fortifications is that marksdwarves don't seem to want to utilize them properly - either hanging around in the middle of the tower and not firing (not close enough to the fortification / no line of sight) or if you give a kill order instead of a station order they tend to walk out from behind it and try to get themselves impaled by the nearest pikeman. As far as the max velocity goes, check the climactic battle in Braveheart where the English longbows are sending arrows through thick wood and leather shields, through a person's arm, chest, and legs, and embedding into the ground under them. Heavy crossbows were also made to kill somebody with one square shot through a steel breastplate with chain and leather underneath, and due to the high velocity I'd guess that's what these are supposed to be. |
Elites can shoot through fortifications with ease, they always have been able. This is why the elites are dangerous. Also, some advice for effectively using crossbows: I find its best to have your battlements be narrow. 3 tiles wide is good. 1 tile wide pathway in the middle, and fortifications on either side of your walls. Give your marksdwarves orders to patrol along the walls. Thats all you need to do, they will handle the rest. Since the battlements are only 1 tile wide they will always be adjacent to the fortifications and so will always be able to fire. Don't give your marksdwarves kill orders. Their job is to patrol the battlements as a defensive force. If you want to send dwarves out to stab at things send out your melee guys. |

Please reopen this or PM me on the forums if non-elite goblins can easily shoot through fortifications in 0.40.08+. |
