Summary | 0003733: miners won't mine / woodcutters won't cut
Description | Under no circumstances will the miners or woodcutters assigned with proper labors pick up a pick/axe respectively to accomplish their labors on a certain embark. Several things possibly made this embark unique: - on embark, a cavern immediately collapsed - all of the laborers have skill at novice level, but much higher military skills (max starting level)
Steps To Reproduce | Set military skills to 9 hammer skill, 10 armor skill, and 1 mining. Will the dwarf refuse to pick up the pick?
Additional Information | Searching the forums, it seems as if several people have had this bug occur. To clear up any ambiguity: Yes, the proper skills are enabled. Yes, areas for labor have been designated. Yes, the tools are accessible. Yes, the various methods have been tried repeatedly: forbidding, dumping, saving/reloading, turning skills off/on.

Just tried equiping those dorfs on the military screen, and interestingly enough, it says that the items ARE in their possession (green check mark) - but out of the equipment assignment screen, they are sitting on the ground - not in their hands - and the labor still doesnt work. |
|
This was happening at my fort, but as soon as the next wave of migrants arrived all the dwarves I had told to become miners suddenly took up the job. In the hope of finding a cause, I'll note that my original miners and wood cutter had both been injured while protecting the fort from a flock of elk birds. Two of them died, and the third is just taking up space in the hospital. |
|
oh, a detail: one of the migrants was a wood cutter himself. |

You should both upload saves demonstrating this problem to http://dffd.wimbli.com/ |

This seems to be the same bug as 0003660 although it's certainly a more detailed report. |

As originally explained in 0001199 there is a workaround to get them to do work. I've fully refined the process to prevent draft related unhappiness. First, create a squad in the military and manually assign your miners and woodcutters the equipment for their tasks. Make sure you turn off their labors first. Once they generate the "pickup equipment job." pause the game and turn their mining/woodcutting labor back on. After they pickup their equipment they will hold onto it and go off to work. I'm not sure if it will work for hunters or not yet, since they need more than 1 piece of equipment. They like to drop their equipment again from time to time though, say if they get thirsty, and you have to reassign it using this method once again. And if you turn their labor on after they've picked up their equipment they'll immediately drop it. |

I have another bugged save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5740 Description from wimbli of issue: 34.03 DF_Phoebus_34_03v00 save My dwarfs wont mine. I have tried the work arounds posted on the bug reports section of bugzilla and google, and yahoo groups, as well as work arounds from the main site forums. They consist of disabling and enabling mining, making sure dwarves are not in the military and doing it from the games interface. I lost the ability to mine when my 2cnd dwarf got injured. They were not military dwarves at the time. I dumped their pick once I had them moved to a hospital bed. I have not been able to get anyone else to mine again. The pick just stays at the stockpile or the dumpsite (claimed) once I forbade picks from stockpiles (incase that was the issue). I surmise that it is still owned by the broken miner, or they are trying to get the pick that is unrecoverable in the water. I attempted to forbid the pick in the water, the available pick was still not being used. Hope this helps. |

uggi's save from 0001199: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3383 |

Here is a save from 0.40.09 http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=9427 Three miners not mining, all have picks, they where all mining then there was a job cancelation for an unknown reason and now none mine and the farmer won't build farm. All miners have picks and mining enabled no burrows made. None in military at anytime. Brands new world, first embark in world. Woodcutter will chop trees. |
|
Continued playing, mechanic won't make mechinisms despite granite being available. tried dumping some. None would dump designated granite. Made below ground food stockpile none would transfer food to it or harvest plants to it. Made an above ground one and they would use it and harvest plants to it. With even more playing I can get them to mine on z level 0 and z level -1. and the famer to build farm plots on z-1. |
|
@Sivarty... i just loaded your save and there is no problem with mining or farming. Your dwarfs just can't get below L-143 because your ramps lead into walls. http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Ramp |
