Summary | 0000398: Underground plants do not grow correctly across different types of soil.
Description | I breached an underground cavern and underground plants started to grow in areas of my fort that had a soil floor and were underground. I dug out a large cavern two Z levels below the surface that was not exposed to sunlight at any time and was roughly half silty clay and half yellow sand. On the yellow sand side underground plants and trees quickly began to grow, covering it in a few seasons. In the silty clay half, nothing is growing. The entire area has not had any foot traffic, so plants are not being trampled.
Steps To Reproduce | breach underground cavern, dig large room in a soil layer that has a floor containing two types of soil, make sure the room is never exposed to sunlight.

Uh, doesn't the floor need to be muddy for plants to grow on it? |
Yea, you need a muddy piece of land for shrubs to grow, although why no trees are growing in the silty claw half I do not know. Seems like it might be a new bug. |
I'm not talking about crops that dwarves plant, I'm talking about trees and shrubs, in this case the underground kind. I haven't irrigated the test cave, the floor is exactly as I left it, 50/50 silty clay and yellow sand. The half with yellow sand is covered with underground trees and shrubs, the silty clay half has nothing growing on it. |
so... 1. reveal underground feature containing plants and probably a water source 2. dig out an underground area in two kinds of soil (yellow sand/clay) 3. observe well, I have both of these things going on, I just have to task some digging and see what happens. I'll let you know. |
soo... I've dug out an area in -- black sand, sandy loam and silt loam. No immediate growth observed, How long did it take for plants to start growing for you? I have to ask a question. have your dwarves tracked mud into the room? take a careful (k) look around. |
I seem to think it'll take at least a month, if not a season, for sprouts to appear. They take 6 seasons to fully grow... Also a pertinent note : [Tower caps will grow on...] any subterranean soil (disputed; unmuddied soil may require soil walls on the z-level below for growth; see talk page for details), though muddied soil has a denser production than dry soil. |
ah ha, okay, I do have two showing, time will tell if it will spread to more than one type of soil. and as it happens, I also have an area that is floor over open space, so I can observe that behavior as well. |
My dwarves have not tracked mud into the room. It's a rectangle, with the yellow sand on the right side, silty clay on the left, no mud tracked anywhere. The locked door is on the left side of the room. The sand is covered with underground shrubs and trees now, the silty clay is completely barren. I had the room dug in my second year, I'm past year six of this fort now. |
okay, I've got a dry mixed soil test area as you described. in my case it is black sand and sandy loam. Shortly after the area was formed I locked the door even so a small amount of mud splatter did get into the room before I was able to seal it. Hopefully it won't ruin the results of my test. I've let it run long enough for the first tree to mature which is a Fungiwood. there are fifteen plants in a roughly circular patch. While most of the plants are on the sandy loam this could just as easily be a question of the plants preferring to grow in circular clusters. Some of the plants have formed in black sand as well. More testing will be needed to say anything for certain. as near as I can tell only one of the plants landed on mud, and it was not the first plant to grow. so I think my test is still a go. |
Could the problem be the soil type, instead of just two different soils? So it's not that the plants aren't growing because there are two types of soil, but just that they're having problems growing on silty clay. |
The problem isn't soil type, since there have been a few plants growing on the silty clay. With what DoctorZuber has observed, it seems like the game picks a point and the plants grow within an invisible circle around that point. It might be a bug or it might not, at this point I'm not sure there's a way to tell without word from the almighty one. |
Check what's immediately underneath the dry soil regions where the underground plants are and are not growing. In 40d, shrubs and trees would only grow on dry soil if there were unmined soil walls beneath them within a ≈2 tile radius - if the space underneath contains only unmined stone or has been completely mined out, nothing will grow unless mud is applied. |
that would be consistent with my test, there was a full soil layer under the whole test area. I would have let the test run longer but that fortress fell apart from mass hysteria. I literally had over a dozen berserk dwarfs active at the same time. it was glorious. |
I believe this has been fixed as of 40.0x, likely due to changes made to plant and tree growing. Steps used: 1. Breached the caverns 2. Dug out a large (about 50x50) amount of underground soil (no mud). This stretched across 2 biomes and consisted of clay, sand and loam Plants ("grass", bushes, and saplings) grew on all types of soil. |
