Summary | 0004021: Bird claims multiple nest boxes but uses none
Description | My female birds have some issues with nest boxes: if they lose their original one, they will never use another. It does not matter how many nests I place, or whether they are brand-new or the original which I had pulled out from under them, or how many times I de- and re-construct them, or how many nests are available. Once a box is placed, a bird will claim it, rush towards it, flash a blue question mark and run away again. No new clutches are laid, they never even sit on their nests. A bird can even claim multiple nests that way.
Steps To Reproduce | 1. Make and place a nest box. 2. Wait for a bird to claim it. 3. Deconstruct the nest while the bird sits on it. 4. Place one or more nest boxes again (old or new doesn't matter).

I had this happen with a turkey hen, who had 7 nests at one point, and was wandering around the pasture claiming more. I ended up giving up and butchering her. |
