Summary | 0004388: Animals dying in cages leave corpses, which cannot be used or removed
Description | If an animal in a cage dies, it's corpse cannot be removed. Unfortunately, this particular corpse has ivory, which my moody dwarf desprately wants.... I have tried the following: 1) Selecting the animal in the stocks screen (Animal does not show, though it's corpose shows in inventory, where I cannot do anything with it. 2) Building the cage, linking a lever to the cage and pulling the lever. Cage/lever is deconstructed, but corpse remains in the cage. 3) forbidding/unforbidding the cage and the corpse (various combinations) 4) Building the cage, attempting to remove the assigned animal (no assigned animal, corpses do not show up) 5) Marking the corpose as 'dump'. No action is taken Things I have not tried yet: 1) Selling the cage (no traders) 5) Meling the cage -- this one is pine.
Steps To Reproduce | 1) Put a grazing animal in a cage 2) Wait until animal dies
Additional Information | I have set aside a savegame, if interested.

I usually put the cage in a stockpile, press 'k', move the cursor over the cage, press Enter to view the contents of the cage, press Enter again to view the corpse, then press "d" at that screen to mark the corpse for dumping. A Refuse Hauling dwarf will be along shortly to pop it out. I believe mass dumping (d-b-d) over the cage, then using "k" to unmark the cage itself also works (same procedure to strip living goblin prisoners of their equipment). |
|
Does Langdon's procedure work for you, GrimerX? |
|
Was the animal tame? It has been my experience that non-tame animals which die in cages will be butchered without any problem. Tame animals which die in cages won't be butchered, not because they are in a cage but because they are tame animals which died from a cause other than being deliberately slaughtered at a butcher's shop. |
|
You can d-b-d over the cage even after it's been built, deselect the cage itself for dumping and the corpse(s) will be removed. If you have a quantum cage none of the live animals will be dumped/released. (version 0.31.25) |

Okay, my bad on this one. Selecting the corpse for dump does work. It just took a *long* time for the refuse hauler to realize he had something to do. Patience.... :-) |

Thanks for the follow-up. |
