DescriptionI bought some whip vine seeds from a caravan, but can't plant them. The seeds aren't forbidden or anything like that. It can't just be a glitch that affects all seeds bought from caravans, because I also bought blade weed seeds from the same caravan, having never gathered any blade weeds, and was able to plant the blade weed seeds. It can't just be a rule that seeds only grow in their native alignment, because I can grow seeds outside of their native alignment. (My site is part Mirthful and part Wilderness, and I can grow sun berries right in the middle of the Wilderness part of the site.) I have no idea why I can't grow whip vines.
I tried forbidding, unforbidding, dumping, and then unforbidding the bag of whip vine seeds, but they remained unplantable.

This is a long-standing issue that dates back to 0.28.181.40d and earlier - seeds cannot be planted until your fortress has made use of a product made from that plant. Your ability to plant blade weed seeds is likely due to you having purchased (and possibly used) emerald dye in the past. Get some whip vine flour or whip wine and you should probably be good to go.

Well, that explains why I was eventually able to plant whip vines in late summer (or maybe it was early fall), after buying whip wine from the human caravan. But if I hadn't lucked out and gotten whip wine from them, I would have had to wait at least a year to plant whip vines. It's such an annoyingly non-guaranteed workaround.
And it's ridiculous that such an old bug still hasn't been fixed.

This is still an issue in 40.06

now with more types of plants it's more of an issue.

Tons of outdoor plants we could buy from a caravan but even with the seeds we can't use them.

really annoying.
