Summary0004721: Manager/Broker request meager office even though he has one already
DescriptionMy expedition leader/manager/broker/bookkeeper request a meager office even though he has a modest office.
Steps To ReproduceI have tried several things. I changed the office size to 1 tile to effectively giving him a meager office, but that didn't work. I tryed to assign another dwarf as manager, giving him a meager office (using another throne setted up in other room) but he requested a meager office too. In his holdings he shows a meager office and requires a meager office. If i disable the bookkeeping and the manager for my expedition leader he demands nothing, so the problem is not related to being a broker. If i enable either manager or bookkeeping he complains and sais he has no office.

The nobles screen will always list that fact that your nobles want something specific for their rooms - for example, a modest office. It will display in a different colour depending on whether or not their want is satisfied. I believe red is "not even assigned something similar", yellow is "assigned something similar but with insufficient quality" and white is "assigned something sufficient or better".

In fact, it WILL, and has always, listed what they have and what they want, even if it is the same.

Does this explain your behaviour?

Additionally, only managers and bookkeepers require a table to work at, hence an office. Brokers and expedition leaders don't.

That only explains the fact that he wants a meager office even though he has a better one, but suddenly he started complaining about NOT having an office at all, even though the noble screen shows that in fact he does. Anyway, i didn't get the chance to verify if making another dwarf the manager yielded the same behaviour, because i only checked the nobles screen and in didn't wait for the new dwarf to actually try to use the office. And now is a little to late to verify it, because shortly after i wrote this report the fortress got overrun by goblins and was lost. I will see if i can reproduce this behaviour and make a backup copy the moment it happens. Thanks for your fast response!

In what way was he complaining about not having an office? If he was getting unhappy thoughts, it's possible those happened before you gave him an office - in general, you should wait at least a year to make sure that any old thoughts are forgotten. If you're actually getting job cancellations (for "Update Stockpile Records" or "Manage Work Orders"), then that's probably a different problem.

I was getting manage work orders cancelations. I don't know what did i do that might have changed his behaviour. He was given a 5x5 room from start. One of the walls of the room opened a subterranean cave, so i built some walls to isolate the room. There, i setted his office. He started working as bookkeeper, manager there, without complains. Some time afterwards i smoothed the stone of the room, and around the time he started complaining about not having an office, i did two things. First, i bulit a bed in the same room, and second i sent an engraver to engrave the room. That is around the time when trouble started. I read that unhappy thoughts would came if the bed was in the same room. so i built a separate room for it and moved it there. He continued to complain about not having an office. So i built a throne/table in a small room on the living quarters level and set that place to be his office. But he still complaint, and the nobles screen showed he now owned a meager office, which was what he requested, instead of the modest office he had. I later tried changin the material of the seat and built a wooden chair. I placed it in the main hallway of the fortress and setted it as a 1x1 tile study. He still complaint. Then i tried changing dwarfs, but as i stated before, i wasn't aware that the "request" on the nobles screen was normal, so i didn't give that dwarf enaugh time to try updating the records or managing anything. That's about the time the goblins came and smashed my dwarfs to dust...i guess wooden swords aren't that good.

If that's the case, this might be related to 0004055 and/or 0002675. Did you have any burrows defined at the time?

I had already read those threads before posting, but neither of them gave any clues of how to solve the problem. No burrows where defined when it happened. In fact, i checked the wiki about keeping civilian dwarfs inside when the goblins came, and that was the first time i ever used the burrows. The expedition leader was not defined as a military dwarf and he was performing other tasks, like mining and hauling without problems. I did disable all labors when a caravan showed up for the second time, because the first time he was so busy that he never showed up at the trade depot. After the trading was done i re enabled all labors back. I'm sure i did that before the office problems started. I don't know if it's important, but i'm using Dwarf Therapist to manage the labors.

You had a lot going on during this episode and without a save demonstrating the actual problem, we can't rule out user error/misunderstanding. I'm resolving this for now - if you can reproduce this, provide a save, or can tie it to the burrow issue, please reopen this report and post your new information.
