Summary | 0005333: Up/Down Stairways carved from the Designation Menu only expose lower level, never upper level.
Description | When designating Up/Down Stairs to be carved (d-i), the carved structures look correct, being displayed as "x", however, only the Stone layer on the Floor below will be visible and accessible by dwarves. The upper Level remains black and subsequently designated digging areas will be ignored as non-accessible.
Steps To Reproduce | Designate Up/Down Stairs to be carved, wait for excarvation to complete, try to go on one z-level above the stairs

Have a save game available, but can't attach it here... |

Use http://dffd.wimbli.com/ Also, this is, I believe, intended behavior. Every Z-Level has contents and a floor. the floor blocks the view of the Z-level above. |
|
If this is intended behaviour, it doesn't really make sense: Why should I be able to create Up/Down stairs if they only function as Down stairs? It is impossible for me to place anything on the Z-Level above my Up/down stairs, so I can't even build the down stairs or further Up/down stairs to match. In DF2010, I was able to create up/down stairs on one level and then continue digging / carving stairs in both Z directions, now I can only go downwards. |

In the latest release, it does seem that dwarves are loathe to dig upwards, but they will, eventually. (At least in my experience, both in 34.1 and 34.2) Not being able to see what is above you does not prevent you from digging up. Have you tried undesignating other labors and dig positions to see if they'll start digging up? If they still refuse to, that's A: a serious problem and B: not universal |
|
OK, seems to be just a matter of time - takes almost every other digging job to be complete before digging upwards is performed! Can be closed! On other notes: Once they DID start digging upwards, the first thing they did was breaching an aquifer from below! Nice Shower in my Main Staircase! |
|
The hesitancy to dig upwards is 0002794. |
