Summary0005689: Gem cutters won't cut gems, won't leave their workshops, die of thirst
DescriptionThis happened to me first in 0.34.04 with a world generated in 0.34.04, now it has happened again in 0.34.05 with a world generated in 0.34.05.

When I have a gem cutting dwarf, if I assign them to cut gems at a jeweler's workshop, will cancel the job saying that they don't have any of whatever gem I assign them to cut, even with a stockpile full of rough gems (of the types I've told them to cut, I'm not crazy) right next to the workshop. However, they also won't leave their workshop and eventually die of thirst.

Reminder sent to: HelloLion

Are you using burrows, and if so, are the workshop and gem stockpile in the same burrow?

They're probably stuck in the workshop. Workshops have impassible tiles (which appear as dark green X's during building placement). If workshops are built with adjoining walls in the wrong places, the dwarf that builds the workshop will become trapped in it. Does that explain things?

Like Foot said, try deconstructing the building. If the dwarf wanders off, that is probably the issue.

Oh man I feel like an idiot, apparently I had it in just the wrong spot! Thanks everyone for the help.

Thanks for the follow-ups - it is always the painfully obvious that gets you! hehe

For future reference, the wiki has the workshop layouts on each of their pages:
