Summary0005802: No Crossbows for Ambushers at embark
DescriptionI haven't tried this on my Windows box, but...

On my linux machine (Ubuntu 11.10) when attempting to give a dwarf ambusher as its highest ability to get the freebies (crossbow, bolts, armor), the dwarf shows up equipped as a peasant.

This was done in v0.34.07. Save to be uploaded shortly. Will provide link when available.
Steps To Reproduce1) Embark anywhere.
2) Take any dwarf (all seven, even) give them Proficient Ambusher (and nothing else to ensure there are no competing jobs. I have tried both with and without competing military skills)
3) Finish embarking.
4) Go to stocks screen.
5) Marvel at the fact that you have no crossbows listed in your weapons, and no ammo available.
6) For completeness, go to military screen, create a squad and attempt to assign any specific armors. There are none.

Save with 7 proficient ambushers and no crossbows. Bit of a game breaker. I was hoping to have a few freebies for those zombies.

you also need to get pick and axes for your miners and woodcutters, that looks pretty much intended to me

only immigrants with the right job later bring their freebies

edit: there is also a reason why you get quivers in the default embark selection from toady, so you can quickly make wooden crossbows and bolts and start hunting, as leather is not as easy to obtain in first month

thehammeredone, is there something that makes you think this is a bug as opposed to a deliberate change?

i doubt this is a bug, it was like that since 33a... you need to bring own weapons and armor on embark, even if you get free stuff with migrants. i mean saying this is a bug is like saying you should get a free anvil with any smith related job, a free pick for each miner, etc etc.

I don't believe in black-and-white definitions of bugs, especially not in the context of Dwarf Fortress in which undocumented changes are normal. I'm not even clear on whether this is a change or not, and Rhenaya's point about the other equipment-using professions is a good one -- bringing your own picks and axes is completely normal. Please reopen this or PM me on the forums if there's a good reason to reopen this.
