Summary | 0006279: Steel industry uses up too much flux
Description | When the mining yields were fixed to 25%, no changes were done to the material input or output levels of pig iron and steel bar production, so the creation of pig iron still requires 1 full boulder of flux. On a fortress of mine, this has had me strip mine the first few layers of rock for any flux to be found just to keep my militia supplied with full steel equipment.
Steps To Reproduce | Find a flux layer, acquire iron bars and coal, set up a sizeable steel industry and have your miners keep it supplied with flux, take note how how much flux you have to mine out in the process.
Additional Information | Some fun with numbers: Full steel armour and equipment (helm, breastplate, mail shirt, gauntlets, greaves, high boots, shield and weapon) for one dwarf requires 12 steel bars. Creating 2 steel bars requires 2 flux boulders. Mining flux yields on an average 1 boulder per 4 squares mined out. In other words, providing a full squad of 10 dwarves with steel armour will require you to mine out 10 * 12 * 4 = 480 squares of flux on an average. It's nothing insurmountable on these levels, but increase the number of squads and you'll quickly reach absurd numbers. On top of that, you may also wish to keep your marksdwarves and ballistas supplied with steel ammunition as well, and decorating your fortress with steel is just a big no-no.
