Summary0000637: Snow flickers during season change
DescriptionA snow storm occurred at my fortress during the latter part of Late Winter causing most the area to turn white with snow on the ground. Spring then transitioned and everything instantly turned green I guess showing that the snow melted. However it was still snowing and therefore changing the tiles to white again. But because it was spring it would melt the snow.

The strange thing occurred when it would wait a couple of seconds to clear the snow back to green. Making the area flicker between patches of white snow on the ground and no snow anywhere green grass. Continued to do it for while until the snow storm subsided. On a fast machine I didnt notice much drop in FPS when it would clear out the snow on the ground...but I can imagine on a less spec'd computer it might cause a performance issue.
Steps To ReproduceHave a snow storm in late winter that lasts till spring transitions and watch the ground for snow accumulation.
Additional InformationMaybe have it stop snowing on transition from winter to spring and start raining instead? Or alternatively snow doesnt instantly melt on transition but instead melts in sort of the same way water evaporates?

In any case, its only happened once to me but I'd imagine its reproducible under the above conditions.

What's the bug here? It's realistic for snow to sometimes melt when it hits the ground. Also, does it still happen in 31.06?

All the snow is melting instantly when spring arrives. I've had it happen the first frame. Lots of snow while paused at the start, then resumed and have it instantly melt.

But in this case it's still cold enough for it to snow and the snow on the ground melts gradually instead of instantly.

So maybe the snowing weather lasted too long?
The snowing weather doesn't get stopped at season change?
and/or
All snow/ice should not instantly melt in one frame?

Snowy weather lasting "too long" is arguably not a problem at all -- that happens in real life. The instant transitions/melting are a little weird, but possibly just an unfinished feature rather than a bug.

Also, the latest releases have had a lot of temperature tweaks. That's why I asked if this still happens in 31.06.

yes, I saw it happen in the latest version 31.06. I embarked on a Half freezing half cold map. The part that was cold experienced a snow storm and because it was spring every about 2 seconds all snow on the map would melt instantly (green grass) Then re-accumulate (snow white). Its not the snowy weather during spring that I see as a bug or even an issue. (lived in a couple places where it snowed up till june) anyway, Its the flicker that happens when snow melts instantly and the game clears the whole map area of snow in a single frame. It can get kind of ... odd. O_o

If you have a save demonstrating the repeated "flickering," you should definitely upload it to http://dffd.wimbli.com/

Hmmm, I'll see what I can do. I didn't realize weather was an aspect that was "saved" in a save... I've never really payed attention.

It should get saved, unless there's something really weird going on. If you manage to get a save while it's flickering, you can reload it to verify that it demonstrates the problem.

I've seen a similar effect in my current game, playing in the latest version (as of 3/11/11).
I would like to include my save, but am not sure what to grab out of the DF folder, or where to upload it.

I can only describe it as an odd effect, where snow falls (much like rain), and leaves the tile white colored, as I believe is intended. After a few seconds, the entire area is completely wiped off (to the natural vegetation color), but the snow continues in its random falling pattern.

Odd, because before the snowfall started the ground was completely covered in snow. Much of the map, indeed, is still completely covered. I was really surprised when half of my screen suddenly transformed from white to green!

You can zip up the entire region folder in your DF directory/data/save/region1 (or whichever region it is) and upload it to http://dffd.wimbli.com/

Then post a link to the file here.

This is the bugged save. I included the entire region folder.
"Demonstrates odd snow behavior, across what I believe to be the boundary of two biomes. If you check the announcements, a snowstorm has just arrived. Prior to the snowstorm, the entire map was covered in white snow."

Thanks, Dwarfu, it's been a while since I've done DF. Long time since I've used the DFFD, too.
