Summary | 0006500: Peripheral nerve damage does not heal
Description | In Dwarf Fortress, peripheral (sensory and motor) nerve damage does not heal, creating serious consequences for injured dwarves. However, in real life, peripheral nerve damage _does_ heal; only damage to the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve) is permanent. In the interests of realism and gameplay balance, peripheral nerves should be allowed to heal. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroregeneration#Peripheral_nervous_system_regeneration

Within my recent game, a heavily injured 'citizen' (modded game) left the hospital once their flesh wounds had been addressed with two paralysed motor neurone severed arms, and a motor neurone damaged foot rendering them unable to stand up or grasp. (image of health screen attached) https://puu.sh/AP0m9/f5e1d8204a.png Nerve damage is not accounted for in the game's existing healthplan, and while there are some development goals that may allievate it in the future, such as prosthetic replacements for irreperable damage by amputating, the original issue report however isn't exactly a bug except in the nature that the hospital does not recognise or have any means to treat it when patients with extreme nerve damage are admitted. (see attached picture of message spam from a pernamently disabled citizen): https://puu.sh/AP0aT/1d1620ad97.png 0000309 bears relevancy to this issue report in that ignoring the nerve damage can lead to dwarves and whichever race of typically biological visitor leaving their bed early instead of remaining there safely believing themselves to be healthy enough to complete tasks with their hands (when a seperate BP part of their arm is disabled with hands being the joint) irregardless until a further point in the future where medical dwarves are able to take action against it by more advanced medical practices. |
