Summary0008421: Trolls in Dark Fortress and some goblin citizens are hostile towards their faction leader/demon master
DescriptionI went to fight a goblin civ's leader in his dark fortress, and to my surprise some of the trolls started fighting the demon on my side. I don't have a save right now because the adventurer died, but I will try to go back there with another adventurer and see if I can replicate the problem.

There were also prisoners running around the building (not in cells!) who were hostile towards both my adventurer and the demon, while shouting that they would like to be rescued - likely the same bug as in report 0007722. I wasn't able to talk to them normally though, and their status was "lethal".

I can corroborate this. I've seen the trolls attack the demon leader (and the demon leader just about always attacks the non-demon leader in the throne room).

As for the prisioners running around, I haven't seen that in a while. However, I've noticed that sometimes some cells will be missing a door. For a while, I thought this was because the trolls were smashing them at random (never saw them actually do it though), but when I saw the same thing in a tower of a goblin civ that didn't domesticate trolls, I figured that it was a generation issue.

The demon was also running from me, not sure if this is intended behaviour either.

The part with the demon running from you was fixed in 40.11 or 40.12.

I've seen this issue occur in 43.05, as well as a very similar one: any non-goblin dark fortress residents are prone to being attacked by resident trolls and beak dogs when both are within the adventurer's vicinity. This happens even when said non-goblin happens to be the lord appointed to the dark fortress.

Factional forces work within goblin dark fortresses, this can be observed in adventure mode by applying modifications to allow adventurers within that entity and then querying around for information. Usually there will be between 3-4 or more based off the size of the civilisation.

A way to work around factional forces is to create a working chain of command with military militia and offsite positions feeding into the generated [GENERAL] position appointed by the demonic leader without replacing both generated roles. One way to do this is to create a off-site lieutenant position which is a subordinate of the general and place localised site militia under them to be controlled and receive orders from above.

This is so that they work as hearth-soldiers and guards in duty and service to the ruler, rather than individually to the site. This also includes executioners (centered at the dark fortress site by [REQUIRES_MARKET]) to enact capital justice if the prisoner survives a usually fatal encounter with the militia to be imprisoned.

Goblin psychology (racial and civ values combined with ethics) is geared towards outbursts of violence, when factions are not involved, outbursts of individual anger cause entity citizens to attack other goblins, beak dogs trolls and even their demonic leader if close enough in range to be a target.

Since goblins talk with trolls as intelligent entities within the fortress (despite being unable to speak back), the troll may unintentionally be part of the factional forces, if not pulled in additionally into anger driven loyalty cascades and other fighting directed towards or around the demonic lord.

> Additionally @smjjames certain doors within dark fortresses generate already open, usually triggering the lever mechanism they are attached to will re-active the door to close in usually one or two tries.

Within my modded game with the localised population 'policing' (as per position additions) and playing as a core goblin entity citizen, the local demonic lord shows no abnormal signs of hostility and functions as normal to my own observation, i have coupled him with a subordinate [RULES_FROM_LOCATION] site noble and they tolerate and talk to each other in the company of the throne room.

Demon skittishness was patched out, but from a test observation made by myself, the demon in residence within 30 years of world-gen (meaning some goods produced as per the site and weapons based within the site) on their person possessed no more than exceptional quality civilian clothes to wear when in the tower. Despite physicality, they are not carrying weapons/armor and i hypothesize that they do not equip weapons/armour when leading armies either (but I will update those details once i commit my demon lord to leading a siege by settling near by with a dwarf-fortress/ruining relations with my goblin site attacking merchants)

> Due to [OUTSIDE_FORTIFICATIONS](for trenches) and the site being 'claimable' by unconventional means for demons, direct successors by force and very rarely [POWER] entities, the poorly equipped demon may be exhibiting behavior intended for hamlet/city type province rulers, especially if they are unarmed in being skittish and relying on guards to protect them, in which in vanilla DF there are none.
