Summary0000851: Tower caps growning in the workshop
DescriptionNot sure if this is a bug or a feature, but I have a workshop area on clay soil and some areas waiting for expansion that nobody walks on 1 Z level under the surface. A week or so after I opened a cavern, towercaps started growing there. It seemed a bit fishy, so I thought I'd bring it up.

It's a feature. Fungi-trees will start growing in certain underground areas once you break into a cavern. Use them to your advantage.

Well, it's not "certain". Underground plants will grow (almost? according to the wiki) anywhere there is soil and low traffic - including in your workshop area.

But yes, perhaps-poorly-documented feature.

Shouldn't constructing a workshop clean away the mud?

to my knowledge, the growth isn't related to mud, only soil.

I'm still not sure whether agatharchides meant that plants were growing in an actual workshop building, or just in the general vicinity.

I can confirm that they grow in workshop tiles. I don't know if they can mature to be trees, but they can definitely sprout in workshop tiles. I've always ignored them and it's never been an issue.

Reading the report that way, it looks like it might be considered a bug.

Deleted other note on the way underground plants sprout; needs to be re-added: Underground plants/fungi can sprout from both mud and full soil walls. Thus a workshop over full soil walls does not need mud to generate saplings.
