Summary0008643: Dwarves dig holes and cant get up, die of starvation
DescriptionWhenever I dig down to the level lower than the surface, my dwarfs get stuck and starve themselves to death. Its very annoying and has ruined every singal one of my fortresses at one time or another.
Steps To ReproduceDig one level down from the surface, than dig another. Ta da, stuck dwarfs.
Additional InformationI am using the Lazy Newb Pack.

If you tell the dwarves to dig themselves into a pit with no exit, of course they will starve to death.

You need to tell them to dig themselves out of it—either by making a ramp or stairs up to the surface, or by digging a tunnel from where they are to some other part of your fort.

As you may have noticed, the dwarves in DF will, by and large, do exactly what you tell them, and no more. Thus, if you don't tell them how to get themselves to safety, they will never be able to. They aren't going to magically know that they need to dig themselves an exit stair there to get out of their pit o' death.

 How are you "digging down" (channeling, digging ramps, digging stairs, etc.)? If you're channeling, this is expected behavior - dwarves cannot escape from a vertical pit.

 Now I know the problem! The tutorial I was going off of said to channel. Must be outdated. Thanks guys. My fortresses are saved! Now I just feel silly.
