Summary | 0008969: Minor construction oddness
Description | For as long as I've played Dwarf Fortress, dwarves have been unable to build constructions if they can't access a tile orthogonally adjacent to it. I'm well aware that this is expected behavior; the oddness I refer to is that even when an orthogonally adjacent tile is available, dwarves will often stand diagonally adjacent to the construction they're constructing. Given that the game considers it necessary for them to be able to stand orthogonally adjacent to the construction, one would think that they would actually, well, do that. This may apply to other buildings too, come to think of it; I can't recall ever attempting to build anything but constructions in a location that was only accessible diagonally.
Steps To Reproduce | The way I often come across this is when building walls around a constructed floor, for sealing off caverns and the like in the middle of my main stairway. One has to build scaffolding in order to get the corner walls in place, but dwarves building the corner walls rarely actually stand on the scaffolding.

This was around for a while and is I think well known thing: dwarves can work both orthogonaly and diagonaly from the site but orthogonal access must be possible. I guess for intended behavior. |
|
The issue could be that constructions must be supported orthogonally - even if dwarves can reach a tile diagonal to the build site, it wouldn't be possible to build a construction without an orthogonal support. (Of course, grates and bridges can be considered supports due to 0000511, even though they won't actually support constructions.) |

lethosor: It's not. I can have a wall supported by another wall, which a dwarf can't build because there is no adjacent floor. Detros: I'm aware it's well known. I just thought I'd mark it in the bug tracker because it's another case of dwarves completely ignoring something they demanded to have--a minor bug, but still a bug. |
