For me, it is saying "recruit" for all of them (animal people, human, gob, etc.), and this is intentional -- the perspective is always from your race. So if you are playing a non-human, it says "human bard" when you look at a human, and if you are playing a human, it would just say "bard". The same applies to your profession in 'z'.

Do you have a save that doesn't follow those rules for the regular races?

Reminder sent to: HailTheAbyss

Did Toady's explanation confirm what you were seeing (animal man views animal man, versus animal man views anyone else)?

Toady, I just created a couple of pocket worlds to test in - the dwarf adventurer that you control has their name and race in the upper left hand corner, with skills underneath. I did not mean looking at other characters, but at your own player character.

For the bobcat woman character I made it just says "swordsman" and does the same for any animal person that is given a weapon skill during character creation. For a human outsider it says Recruit even if you make them a Demigod with Grand Mastery of a weapon. For a goblin in a dwarf civ it says Crossbowman when I gave him some skill. An elf in an elf civ has the name. This is all in 42.02 and it does not feel consistent. Here is a pack of saves with different chars from the same PC:

Did a quick check on my desktop PC and the same thing happens. I think it may also depend on them being part of civilizations where they are not the dominant species, or something.
Some of the saves have active chars, some also have retired chars, human, goblin, elf, animal man and dwarf.

Also, I just saw that when you look at the items in the inventory of my Gorlak character it says Owner: Swordsman, instead of his name.
