Summary0009450: Thoughts screen and combat report show opposite emotion for same event
DescriptionDwarf mode, world generated in 0.40.23
Hunter improved crossbow.
In combat report the dwarf says: "...improved my crossbow...not satisfying."
On top of dwarf page "Thoughts and preferences" he says: "...very satisfying."

May not be typo/grammar. May be an effect of being horrified in conflict
at the same time. Then combat report should be reworded. It sounds odd this way.

Seems to be a general typo in the battle reports.
Have seen it now also after an argument:
got into an argument with......satisfying/not satisfying

(I just don't know how both of them had the time for an argument
in the middle of the fight ;-)

Can you check whether the dwarves in question think that their emotions should be concealed, or are generally untruthful?

Here is a photo showing the opposite reactions in thoughts versus combat report.

I've been seeing this frequently in 50.12. I haven't had a lot of combat yet, and I get an announcement for just about every thought anyone in the fort has. Almost any time there is a neutral thought announcement, expressed using negation, such as "Kadol Morulroldeth, Marksdwarf: I practiced at the archery target. I take no pleasure in this," it shows up in the unit's thoughts panel as the positive version: "He feels pleasure after practicing at the archery target."

Other examples:
"Sigun Telingdakost, expedition leader: I conducted a meeting in a good setting. That was not satisfying." -> "She felt satisfied after conducting a meeting in a good setting."
"Sigun Telingdakost, expedition leader: I finished up some work. That was not satisfying." -> "She felt satisfied at work."
"Tirist Gomathmorul, Weaponsmith: I talked to an acquaintance. I am not fond of this." -> "She felt fondness talking with an acquaintance."

It doesn't seem to be related to being a liar or concealing emotion. Tirist's personality in particular says, "She tends to share her own experiences and thoughts with others. She is not particularly interested in what others think of her," and she has no liar skill.

However, it looks like it might always log neutral bedroom thoughts correctly:

"Kivish Keskalkodor, Axedwarf: I slept without a proper room. This isn't embarrassing." -> "She didn't feel anything after sleeping without a proper room."

So sometimes, it does the right thing. I have not noticed any errors in the other direction, where the announcement was positive or negative and the log screen version was neutral or opposite in value. It always seems to be an announced negated emotion, but a logged non-negated emotion, as in the original summary.

I've seen more of these, such as:

"Sigun Telingdakost, expedition leader: I got in an argument with Erith Cloistertoes. That's nothing to be bitter about." -> "She didn't feel anything after getting in an argument."

That seems correct. My guess is that it's only creating correct emotion logs when the actual emotion, if not for the negation, would have been negative (e.g., embarrassment or bitterness), but fails when it would have been positive (e.g., fondness or satisfaction).

Another update: Two people had an intellectual conversation in the tavern. One was a fort citizen; the other, a visiting human bard who had just arrived two game days earlier. Here was the result.

"Ano Ostriicen, Human Bard: I had an intellectual conversation with an acquaintance. No, I'm not interested." -> "She doesn't feel anything having an intellectual discussion with an acquaintance."
"Zuntir Mengtaguz, Woodcutter: I had an intellectual conversation with an acquaintance. No, I'm not interested." -> "He is interested having an intellectual discussion with an acquaintance."

This also happened, just before that:

"Ano Ostriicen, Human Bard: I talked to an acquaintance. I am not fond of this." -> "She doesn't feel anything talking with an acquaintance."

So that's a new wrinkle. Best guess, it's messing up in the way I described in the previous update, but only for fortress citizens...?

"Fikod Geshudas, Bone Carver: I got into an argument with Erith Channeledflickers. I'm not angry." -> "She is angry after getting into an argument."

Erith Cattennelas ("Channeledflickers") is a dwarven poet who just arrived, and her first action was to argue with Fikod, a citizen. Could anger be considered positive? If not, that breaks the pattern. Maybe it's just random; I don't know.

On 50.14 — while my Hunter is Hunting, I get this:
Hunting Announcement: "I practiced at the Archery Target. I take no pleasure in this."
Recent Thoughts: "He felt pleasure remembering practicing at the archery target."

I'm not sure that thought ought appear under Hunting Announcements, as well? My first thought was that some relevant Hunting Message got switched out for this one. I'm not sure what to make of whether he's untruthful or not.
