Summary0009877: Crashes when loading save
Description-Playing in Fortress Mode
-When loading a save, it produces the message "Dwarf Fortress.exe has stopped working"
-I assume it's a corrupted save.
-I have several backups - at the most recent available save that is not corrupted, playing on that backup and then proceeding on with saves from that point on corrupts later saves.
-Using DFHack and Dwarf therapist

Steps To Reproduce-Load save
-Crash
Additional InformationCan't upload file on http://dffd.bay12games.com/ because it is >500mb

Hmm, restarting computer seemed to fix the issue. Regardless, would it be a memory issue?

Is your save compressed (COMPRESSED_SAVES in init.txt)? Has the issue recurred since you restarted? It could have been due to DF running out of memory, with a save that large, which should be fixed in the upcoming 64-bit version.

I have turned off save compressed (since it was one of the google results) - after i had this issue so i'm not sure if it will affect consequent saves. Regarding recurrence, since my last note, the issue has recurred. I think it is the case of running out of memory considering that i have to close other programs to load the save file. Sometimes i'm lucky even with chrome open it'll load the save file, but majority of the time not so lucky.

I think turning off DFHack also seems to help (possibly reducing memory?)

Despite this, happy to hear that the 64-bit version is coming out soon (besides the test-build).

1. You're using an outdated version of DF (the latest version is 0.43.04, and it may have already fixed the problem you're seeing).
2. You're using DFHack, which inherently invalidates *all* bug reports (because it could be solely responsible for the crash).

Is there some way you can monitor DF's memory usage while it's loading the save (task manager, maybe)? If it gets close to 2 GB and you haven't enabled the large-address-aware flag on the DF executable (or 4 GB if you have), it's likely an out-of-memory issue that can't really be fixed without transitioning to 64-bit DF (soon!).

You could also see if the 64-bit test version recently posted on http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ works with it (I would copy your save into that version, just to be safe, since it could potentially be unstable and make the problem worse).

@Quietust
Fair enough, i was using the LNP which used 0.42.06 - i'm unaware but can i just simply switch to the latest version of dwarf fortress in LNP?

@lethosor
It hits roughly 1.5k-1.6k. Not sure how to turn on that flag. I may try the 64-bit later.

After some playtesting -
Sometimes i can just load up my save without any issues - while with other programs open. It seems on rarer occasions, i may have to take many tries to load up the save, and sometimes it may only take one try to load up.

If you try to replace the version of DF in your LNP, things will probably break in strange ways. That has even broken saves before, although not irreversibly as far as I know. (The most common problem is LNPs trying to install raws for the wrong version of DF, which, since they're text files, isn't impossible to fix, but it is annoying.)

DF can't possibly be using 1.5k of memory - the executable itself is larger than that, and it gets loaded into memory in its entirety. Do you mean 1.5 GB? That could be close enough for a sudden spike in memory usage to bring down DF if it's limited to 2 GB.

Sorry forgot i had measurements in mb (1.5k mb) - so yes 1.5gb.

Does the save load successfully in the 0.43.05 64-bit build?
