Summary0001031: Scorching hot biome claims to be "heavily forested" but has no trees
DescriptionSame as title. Was re-embarking and regenerating the same world seed over and over to get a map with two underground civs, of different species, on my preferred map. Embarked a few times and there were no trees anywhere on the surface despite the embark screen saying this is a heavily forested area.

By checking an alternate save, in the same embarking area, I can tell where the trees should be; this is denoted by the surface rock type of the neighbouring mountain biome.

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2067 Copy of the save.

Note the murky pools don't even have turtles in them, though they usually do. Odd.

Huh. In 40d I was able to consistently get this bug by renaming a region folder after worldgen but before embarking, but now it works just fine.

I regenerated your world from the save parameters, embarked on the same spot, and it was full of trees. Did this three more times with the same results. I also tried copying your save's raws folder into the one I generated, and generating the world using your raws. Again, trees.

For the benefit of anyone else trying to reproduce this:

This problem doesn't appear to reproduce, so unless you can identify some kind of pattern, there's little chance of it being tracked down.

It only seems to happen once in a while, unfortunately. Completely random as far as I can tell; it isn't just this embark area, it happens now and then on any map with any seed, but incredibly rarely.

I'm looking at temperature settings and have found that I can reliably recreate this missing tree situation by embarking with 1000:1000:0:0 temperature. It seems it's getting hot enough to cook off the trees at worldgen which is an issue all its own. The area shows trees on the regional map, but at embark all I get is sandy patches. I've reproduced this several times in a row on scorching instantly lethal environments.

I'll have to see if I can generate this with less extreme temperature settings, I'll get back to this after I finish playing with a dwarf BBQ theory of mine.

Is your embark location "scorching" ?

Did you attempt to play at all on this treeless embark giving the dwarves the opportunity to boil away into soup? or did you just abandon/save out too fast to see this effect?

I find I can generate this treeless situation reliably with extreme temperature settings. 250:250:0:0 seems to do the trick nicely, and will still leave some pockets on the map that actually do have trees.

If you see this effect in a non-scorching area that's probably something different from what I'm seeing. Let me know.

Not fixed. I have genned several worlds in .19 and seen several occasions of 'heavily forested' or 'woodland' hot biomes with hardly any trees. Those trees have been willows on the edges of a brook or murky ponds.

These have happened in several different biomes, tropical swamp, tropical coniferous, and tropical dry broadleaf.

Not sure if they were scorching or just hot.
