Summary | 0010490: "Spy" arrives as part of migrant group
Description | This appears to be a bug. From what I can tell things aren't supposed to work this way. A "peddler" arrived with his family as part of a migrant wave. He has pretty high swordsdwarf skill so I put him in the military. His job doesn't change from "peddler" from "swordsdwarf (even though his sword skills are much higher than his trading related skills). Nothing too odd so far. Possible display error in job list, and I think peddlers are only meant to arrive as visitors though. However, checking out Legends reveals that my "peddler" is operating under a false name. So he's a spy, I guess. but for whom? Legends shows he's from my civ, and besides spies aren't meant to arrive as migrants, are they? Legends also has no information about him being a spy. He was once a "scout", which might be the same thing? So that seems to be a couple of bugs at once: 1) Visitor type arrives in migrant wave 2) Profession not changing to swordsdwarf when he's active in the military 3) He's a spy who arrived in a migrant group 4) He's a spy who's actually part of my civ 5) Legends mode has no information about him taking on a false identity and such like regular spies get
Steps To Reproduce | Hang about for a visitor type to arrive as part of a regular migrant group. Check him out in Legends to see if he's a fake
Additional Information | Save attached below. Peddler is "Catten FloorTalk" but his real name is "Inod Boltrelics", you can locate him in Legends after retiring the fortress through his wife, "Oddom Boredgutter".

I did some digging around in the exported .xml, and it seems that there are several other wild dwarves who know Inod's false identity. However, this goes unmentioned in legends mode in all their cases. Curiouser and curiouser... |
Active military, you mean like drafted on station or drafted for training in barracks? Well, all this described would be normal in DF, if this was a vampire looking for some Dwarf to drink from. |
Vampires have complete histories in Legends too. So if he's a vampire, that's another bug. Don't think he is though. |
The .xml makes it quite clear he's no vampire. |
For all purposes he is trapped on your site as a migrant now for as long as you're playing, perhaps a siege or other-civ conflict could trigger a loyalty conflict for them, or with a certain amount of save-jumping and expunging the dwarf forcibly to read his slab information. He might not have been directly picked to migrate, but as he has a family in the civilisation he is infiltrating he's been brought along with them rather than staying at home as a family unit. |
Ah, OK. This gets confusing. According to Inod's profile in Legends, he visited a fortress built by the wild dwarf civ The Spry Paddles in 169. I assume that's where he was spying when he got plucked by the rng to migrate to my fortress. Checking out the history of the Spry Paddles we discover that "In the midsummer of 169, the wild dwarf Mistem Chuckbells fooled the Spry Paddles into believing she was "the wild dwarf peddler Catten Floortalk of the Spry Paddles". Wait, Mistem who?! It's a woman... Oh...and Mistem was murdered back in 124.... |
And rather spookily, "in the late Spring of 169, an unknown civilization slipped into Guildmist undetected by The Knowing Net of the Spry Paddles. (Just to clarify, Fantasticdorf, Inod Boltrelics and all of his family were born and raised in the civilization of The Uncommon Rope, that's the civ I'm now playing in Fortress mode. He's not trying to infiltrate us.) |
The reason why that Legends entry mentions Mistem Chuckbells instead of Inod Boltrelics may be bug 0010452. |
Yeah, that looks about right. Will link my save over there too since they don't seem to have one. |

Here's another one from 44.05. I have a "monk", Mel Chamberrag, who arrived with all her family. Her real name is Tosid Tongscolored. Member of my civ. Legends info is more accurate this time. She's been spying on the local humans as the monk Mel Chamberrag (specializing in spying on other spies apparently). Then suddenly she got migrated along with her fake name and profession to my fortress (presumably dragged by her family like in my last world). There's also another spy from my civ, arrived as a migrant like "Mel". But this one came by himself. The scholar "Domas Apexbolted" is none other than the notorious Uzol Murderfigures. Spied on another dwarf civ for a while. Fled (unmasked?), joined a bandit gang (under his real name), then moved to my fortress with the identity he had while he was a spy. All very odd. And probably not intended. http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13460 |

Since I already uploaded this save for another bug, here's another demonstration of migrant "spies". Newly arrived migrant Smuntsu Hatekissed is, as you can probably tell from her goblin name, not who she appears to be. In this case she came with her husband Asen Chainedrazor. Asen's relationships screen lists the fake name, but his thoughts screen shows that he's married to "Tun Laboredthin", Smutsu's real name. A quick browse of Legends reveals that, as in previous cases, Tun was out spying as "the monster slayer Smutsu Hatekissed of the Feral Witches (gobbo civ)" when she was snatched by my fortress for migration. She retained her fake name and profession, but the rest of her thoughts are of her true background (she's from my civ, so shouldn't be a spy). http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13514 Modded world (raws only, no extra hacking). Save was used to demonstrate artifact creator details bug too. Edit Continuing the above game, I put Smutsu in the military. As I mentioned before, he remains Smutsu the Monster Slayer in both citizens list and military screen (rather than 'axedwarf'). However he's now out travelling on a mission, having left the map, at some point (didn't notice exactly when), his name in the military screen has reverted to his real name, Tun Laboredthin. |

v0.44.07: FantasticDorf posted a save in 0010633: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=13574 |

Present in 47.02 , in attached save i recieved a Monk (of the recruited by prophets type) married to one of my immigrants and a peddler who snuck into my fortress migrant wave as a 'trader' revealed by civilization screen's context whilst being my broker who i both suspect to be goblin spies. Monk "Adet Gulgudlute :: Adet Murdertax" being within my third and realised migrant wave imparticular, more detail is in the save description. (( http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=14749 )) |
If he's an actual spy from an actual goblin civ, that's something quite new and probably requires a report of its own (or checking that spies haven't been added to migrant waves). This report is about former spies of your own civilization that appear at your fortress with their false names and identities even though they shouldn't need them (and according to Toady, shouldn't have been picked for immigration in the first place). Check Legends carefully to see who they actually are (if they have a spouse in-fort the spouse's thoughts page (not relationships screen) will usually give away their real name). |
Ok checked your save. Your"monk" is really Urist Orbnature. She was spying on the Confederation of rhyming (human civ) under the false identity of "the Monk Adet Murdertax" when she was picked up by the game (incorrectly) to accompany her husband (your new weaponsmith, Cerol Nightguild) to immigrate to your fortress. So she's not a goblin and not from a monastery. And fits in with this bug report just fine. :) Your broker is Rith Claspjumped (actual name). War veteran, slayer of a rat woman and not spy. He used to be a peddler in Oilmerchant, but he wouldn't have immigrated as a peddler as only visitors (and bugged ex-spies) get to be peddlers. (Immigrants follow the standard game rules of highest skill="profession" which is why he was a "Trader"). Visitors (and bugged ex-spies) have actual professions as their professions.) |
Thanks for clarifying for me @Shonai_Dweller, i wasn't sure whether inter-migrational citizens and villians were a additional level of complexity onto this issue but it should be regarded as important to notice for future comments on upcoming and present versions. |
Yeah, I'm hoping this one gets fixed soon. It's one of the most confusing bugs for anyone on the look out for new villains/artifact release features. |
I have a "peddler" in my fort at the moment who's trained in my military to become an axe lord. Still shows up as "peddler" though. Took him into an interrogation (using a previous unrelated justice case) after seeing this bug report, and he confessed to an alternate identity. |
Yes. That kind of serious mistake is why this needs to be fixed during this release. He's a spy For Your Civ. He's risking his life getting info from goblins for your sake and you're interrogating him because the game won't let him switch back to his real name now that he's back in friendly territory. It's really messing up perceptions of what and who villains are supposed to be. |
So this is fixed in next version, isn't it? |
