Summary | 0010764: World painter having problem with scrolling
Description | This is not new, but i can't find if it was ever reported, so just in case. It is very difficult to scroll the map in the world painter mode. The problem was well described here: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=29671.0

Nevermind, it is working now, just in very confusing manner i can't wrap my head around. It is having a problem but that's all about usability. Can be closed. |
Can you go into more detail about the problem? If it's scrolling unreliably, that's a bug. |
I've spent some time with that thing and finally took a grasp of it (i hope). To scroll the map i need to select a tile with LMB and click on another tile with RMB so tile1 stands on the position of tile2 and map shifts. LMB also does the painting job, so i need to disable it for every brush when i'm scrolling. The tile remains selected after the first move so i can immediately use RMB to move further, but it seems that i'm unable to get past the second screen section of the map like that, because the tile ends up in the corner from where i can only go back, and i have to LMB another tile anyway. All of this plus that tiles don't react on click too much often makes it very tedious. But it works if you have excess of free time and patience (like myself). Reliably tedious, yeah. Notabug. |
So you have to use the left and right mouse buttons at the same time? That is impossible on some machines, so that would be mostly a bug. Being unable to get to certain parts of the map and tiles not reliably reacting to clicks also sound like bugs, if that's what you were describing. |
No, i don't need to hold a button and simultaneously click another, LMB click-release tile1 - RMB click-release tile2. I can get to any part of the map using this steps, but i had a hard time figuring it out. Tiles don't react on click maybe one time out of ten clicks, sometimes twice in a row, maybe more if you unlucky. It is the same for mining designation via mouse, so not the world painter issue anyway. I'll check if this is a platform specific. |
Made a quick test, tile select via mouse works like a charm on win10-64 and has described issues on linux-32. Most likely caused by old hardware. |
Realized that linux version sticks to 2D mode by default, switching to STANDARD improved performance a bit on older hardware. World painter itself works reliably, but controls are ugly. This should be closed. |
If it's still missing an explanation, and the controls are that confusing, I think that can safely be considered a bug. |

I know this post is years old, but I have some information/clarification that might be useful. First of all, this bug is not present in version 0.40.01, so that makes for a pretty good comparison point for how it's intended to work. In that version, holding down right click and dragging scrolls the map in a very straightforward way. Also, you can left-click and drag to make continuous strokes, which doesn't work in more recent versions. So it looks like the problem is specifically that dragging the mouse does not register. Clicking works, and right-clicking in specific ways can scroll the map somewhat, but dragging worked in 0.40.01, and now does not. (I'm using win10) |
