Summary0011067: Not Storing Meat into Pots
DescriptionOver numerous playthroughs, have noticed that dwarves have a habit of not using pots when storing meat in particular. Have also experienced numerous times of plants not being stored but have been able to minimize impact via the suggested trick of smaller stockpiles.

Current playthrough has dwarves who successfully use bins/barrels/pots to store most goods such as plants, seeds, cloth, and thread but refuse to properly store meat. Creating new meat stockpile and forbidding meat in the old one simple causes dwarves to move meat to new stockpile without storing into barrels/pots.

See save for more information: [See stockpile renamed "Issue 1" for original and "Issue 1-2" for move attempt] DFFD link => http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=14315
(In an attempt to limit interference, most other items have been forbidden, all work orders removed, and all burrows are unrestricted)
Steps To ReproduceUnknown

Possibly surge of tameable/slaughterable creatures?
Additional InformationMight be related, but the dwarves also will not transfer items in stockpiles with bins to stockpiles that have 0 bins enabled. See stockpiles renamed "Issue 2", "Issue 2-2", "Issue 3", "Issue 3-2", "Issue 4", and "Issue 4-2" (trying to transfer respective cloths from max-bin stockpiles to 0 bin stockpiles).

One potential reason is that meat stacks can be quite large, and so may not fit into a pot (several hundred cuts of FB meat, for instance).

After double-checking, I did find that there were 3 large stacks amongst the more than 49 separate items of meat in the stockpile (rutherer meat[75], cave crocodile meat [32], and giant fly meat [52]).

Forbidding the offending items changed nothing.

However, by creating two new small stockpiles (1x2) setup to accept only from links and linked into a chain, you can cause your dwarves to single out the offending items and store most of the smaller items. In particular, if the first of the smaller stockpiles is set to 0 barrels and the other to max barrels (2), the dwarves will cycle through the items in the stockpile until everything that can be stored in a barrel has been. This leaves the smaller issue of forbidding the larger items (the smaller stockpiles will need to remain in order to force the dwarves to cycle the food and thus store it properly).

It would seem that the very existence of the 3 large stacks is causing them to stop stacking any of the meat items.

In your save the stockpile has one partially-filled meat pot and one empty pot. Toggling the stockpile to "take from anywhere" causes the dwarves to properly place the meat in the partially-filled pot, the empty pot, and other available pots. However, linking your "empty pot" stockpile does not appear to cause the same result.

It's not clear if stockpile restrictions should apply to stockpile-assigned containers, but since the behavior is inconsistent it's a bug either way.
