Is that not because those are actually singulars. Similar to a sheep. Really I would prefer we simply used the singular, hillock, dark pit, mountain hall, since I see no reason to use the plural. |

"A Hillock" is a mound. Dwarven Hillocks are made up of several (repeat for "pit" and "hall"). Different from "a fortress", "a forest retreat", etc. So, no, plural is correct and original report is right to point out that "a" is problematic. |
