Summary0012034: Troops Constantly Stuck Travelling When Sent On Raid
DescriptionI gather it's a very old bug; I'm using the Steam client, am new to the game and was sending out 4 squads raiding constantly. By year 104 however I'd lost nearly 2 full squads that were stuck on "Travelling" on missions that should have just took a day. At some point, the missing people's entire gear appeared outside my fortress. Googling, I found a suggestion for the original client to replace all the Travelling in the Squad, then cancel the mission; None of the dwarves came back as far as I know though. Sending the new squads out also locks the new bearded boys into being stuck Travelling too however, to the point that Raiding feels useless. Is there any way to get the missing dwarves back at least?

"There are two overlapping issues at play here; the first is that fatalities on a mission are not removed from the Squad, and so seem to be stuck "travelling". You can see they're actually dead by looking in the Mission Report if one is generated, or by opening Legends and searching for the individual Dwarf. The rest of the Squad however will return during normal travelling times, ie if the mission was a day away, a further day will see the survivors return to the map.

The second issue seems to lock the Squad out Travelling permanently, at least until the mission is cancelled. I cannot tell at what point the bug strikes, as no report is generated, and Legends only lists the issue around Early/Mid/Late Season, but the problem is that many of the Squad are assigned to a random location/civilization; if you find them in Legends it will say "So and so settled in X".

Of the 4 squads, "The Knives of Weakness" and Silverhammers have just completed a mission and returned ok.

"The Mischievous Picks" have got stuck with the second bug, the entire squad bar for leader Erith Fikod... have been forcibly settled somewhere else. Starting from the save date of 21st of Malachite, the squad will stay out until you select them and cancel the mission. Looking in Legends from this save directly (IE, at the 21st of Malachite) there is no current information for where they are or what they're doing. Their target, Bentdungeons is half a day away, but they take weeks or months to return, at which point a Legends entry is generated for those who have been resettled somewhere else.

I waited 2 months when testing the above save and they didn't return yet, so the game thinks they're far, far away? But using a previously made save, as below, you can see Eirth Fikod... is back, and going to Legends now shows them resettled.

"The City Watch" have been hit with the first part of the bug; they are all back except for Uja Athodth... who if you look under World Map > Reports actually died on that mission, but is listed as still travelling. You can also see his death in Legends.

I'd also question the marking of it as "Severity: Minor" as it completely breaks the mission system as you lose entire squads at once."

"I think I’ve narrowed down the issue; in the attached save, in the group “The Mischievous Picks”, when rebuilding the squad units 2 and 5, “Urist Asenaran Ken” and “Ast Komankel Kafashmelbil” don’t appear in the dwarf list at all, and so cannot be added to the replacement squad (or any other). When in the old squad, they follow local orders (Position, Training etc) but when sent on world map missions the squad locks up and doesn’t return. When the squad is rebuilt without them, the new Picks will complete world map missions normally... so it seems there’s corrupt data for those two dwarves? Deleting all the local files except world.sav to rebuild the databases doesn’t fix them (at least with regards to adding them to any squad)"
