Summary0012639: low fps with good pc
Descriptionhello, my computer with 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz 2.30 GHz, NVIDIA geforce RTX 3060 (driver updated) have a problem with game performance, in the menu the fps is about 15/20 (when creating a colony 1/2fps), in the game it is about 5/10 (changing from full screen to window helped, previously it was 1/2fps). It's been like this from the very beginning, when I first installed and launched the game. It is possible to play, at least at the initial stage, but it is very tedious. I was looking for what could be wrong in the settings, my GPU works at 100% efficiency, other demanding games run at full settings.

Hello Hrabia,

Are you familiar with accessing the local game files through the Steam UI or Windows file explorer? I do not recall the default path on windows, but if you right-click the game in the Steam UI under 'manage' there is a 'browse local files' option that should open a file explorer window where the dwarf fortress game is at.
If you browse to a folder called 'Dwarf Fortress/data/init/' there should be a file called init_default.txt
At the bottom, there is an entry labelled [PRINT_MODE:AUTO] at line 105
Try replacing 'AUTO' with 2D or STANDARD, for example:
[PRINT_MODE:2D]
[PRINT_MODE:STANDARD]
The available values should be: 2D, 2DSW, 2DASYNC, STANDARD, PARTIAL:<number>, ACCUM_BUFFER, FRAME_BUFFER and VBO if you wanted to try more.
It is possible this has no effect on the steam release version. My second thought would be to try changing your settings in-game to switch to ASCII mode, and see if you still have FPS issues.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this game historically only used your CPU, and GPU did not matter. This may still be true for the Steam release, as my GPU does not appear to be used at all when running the game, though I am on Linux with a RTX 2080.

That is old advice. 2D and STANDARD are currently the only valid options (aside from possibly AUTO).

Hrabia: how large of a world are you generating? How long is its history? My first suggestion would be to turn down some of those options if you've selected ones on the large/long end.

a standard sized world and 100 years of history, it's just weird that despite good hardware this game has major performance issues

Changing to 2D actually helped a little, FPS jumped from 8 to 15

I added a link to the Steam thread where this was originally reported: https://steamcommunity.com/app/975370/discussions/0/4038102936186697965/
In the future, it would be helpful to provide links like this for context.

As mentioned there, please upload an affected save. There's not much anyone can do to diagnose this further without a save. DF is a CPU-bound game, you appear to have a decent CPU, and many people play on similar CPUs without issues like this, so I'm not sure what else we can suggest.

Saves can be uploaded at https://dffd.bay12games.com/ or somewhere else. Please also include all mods your save is using.

Since the platform is a laptop, it likely has both Integrated Intel graphics (for low power usage), as well as secondary NVidia Discrete graphics. Check power options and ensure there isn't a setting forcing the laptop to stay in low-power mode when plugged in to the wall (which likely declocks the CPU and also forces graphics onto the integrated intel GPU). Also see this article on how to force applications onto the NVidia graphics: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000087403/intel-nuc.html
