| Summary | 0001306: Crash on start. | ||||
| Description | Dwarf Fortress will not start, period. The box asking about fullscreen will pop up, but as soon as the program begins to start, the program will crash to the desktop with the following in the event log: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 4/18/2010 5:11:29 PM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Phoenix Description: Faulting application name: dwarfort.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4bc3c470 Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00000000 Faulting process id: 0xc98 Faulting application start time: 0x01cadf3bb4cbb1b3 Faulting application path: C:\Users\Damien\Downloads\df_31_03\dwarfort.exe Faulting module path: unknown Report Id: f432c826-4b2e-11df-808a-001fd09a9868 Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Application Error" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>100</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2010-04-18T21:11:29.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>8150</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>Phoenix</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data>dwarfort.exe</Data> <Data>0.0.0.0</Data> <Data>4bc3c470</Data> <Data>unknown</Data> <Data>0.0.0.0</Data> <Data>00000000</Data> <Data>c0000005</Data> <Data>00000000</Data> <Data>c98</Data> <Data>01cadf3bb4cbb1b3</Data> <Data>C:\Users\Damien\Downloads\df_31_03\dwarfort.exe</Data> <Data>unknown</Data> <Data>f432c826-4b2e-11df-808a-001fd09a9868</Data> </EventData> </Event> This event is always joined by another event, hand-in-hand: Log Name: Application Source: Windows Error Reporting Date: 4/18/2010 4:54:36 PM Event ID: 1001 Task Category: None Level: Information Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: Phoenix Description: Fault bucket 1809479674, type 1 Event Name: APPCRASH Response: Not available Cab Id: 0 Problem signature: P1: dwarfort.exe P2: 0.0.0.0 P3: 4bc3c470 P4: StackHash_0a9e P5: 0.0.0.0 P6: 00000000 P7: c0000005 P8: 00000000 P9: P10: Attached files: C:\Users\Damien\AppData\Local\Temp\WER5C85.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml These files may be available here: C:\Users\Damien\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\AppCrash_dwarfort.exe_fd78a925cfb6ddb0e083f2efc088569f7392bcc7_0f1267ac Analysis symbol: Rechecking for solution: 0 Report Id: 96bed899-4b2c-11df-808a-001fd09a9868 Report Status: 0 Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Windows Error Reporting" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1001</EventID> <Level>4</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2010-04-18T20:54:36.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>8149</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>Phoenix</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data>1809479674</Data> <Data>1</Data> <Data>APPCRASH</Data> <Data>Not available</Data> <Data>0</Data> <Data>dwarfort.exe</Data> <Data>0.0.0.0</Data> <Data>4bc3c470</Data> <Data>StackHash_0a9e</Data> <Data>0.0.0.0</Data> <Data>00000000</Data> <Data>c0000005</Data> <Data>00000000</Data> <Data> </Data> <Data> </Data> <Data> C:\Users\Damien\AppData\Local\Temp\WER5C85.tmp.WERInternalMetadata.xml</Data> <Data>C:\Users\Damien\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\AppCrash_dwarfort.exe_fd78a925cfb6ddb0e083f2efc088569f7392bcc7_0f1267ac</Data> <Data> </Data> <Data>0</Data> <Data>96bed899-4b2c-11df-808a-001fd09a9868</Data> <Data>0</Data> </EventData> </Event> I've tried older versions (0.28.181.40d) and yielded identical results. Quite possibly some kind of system configuration issue or conflict on my desktop. My Windows 7 Pro x86 laptop runs the game perfectly fine, albeit a touch on the slow side. ;) | ||||

Have you made any changes to /data/init/init.txt? Have you tried installing the game in a different location, for example C:\Games or something? |
Foot, I don't think the issue is the location - the users folder isn't write-restricted like Program Files, so it should be fine. He says he can't run any of the old versions either. So it seems like something larger is at work here. As Foot says, these are completely unmodified versions of the game you're using? I guess check audio drivers, video drivers, too. |
Ah okay, good to know that about the Users folder. Updating drivers would be good, yeah, although I'd have expected a driver DLL to show up under the Module Name thing if that was the cause (I don't think it needs symbols for that?) |
Confirmed that User/*Username*/Downloads on Win 7 Pro x64 with DF (.31.02 to be specific) doesn't crash on my machine. So it's something user/hardware specific. I only guess Audio/Video drivers because of the intro vids. Have you tried in both Windowed and Full Screen? Have you tried disabling the intro/audio in the INIT? |

Thanks for the replies, guys. I've tried windowed and fullscreen, yes. Currently the method is: download from website, extract to folder, run executable. No modifications whatsoever. I'm running the 11/24/2009 Catalyst drivers (I think that's 9.11) for my ATI HD4850. I just modified the init.txt to set Sound and Intro to OFF and neither changed the outcome at all.. |
Okay, went ahead and updated the catalyst drivers and now it works just fine.. Thanks for the suggestions, guys. :) Case closed! |
Hahah, hooray! Glad to hear that the game is finally working, no thanks to outdated drivers. Have fun! |
Drivers from last November? Wow, yeah, definitely try updating. Win 7 launch drivers were pretty unstable. It looks like the most recent Win 7 64-bit drivers are from the end of March. e: haha, I'm slow. Glad that worked. |
